AI provides a perfect smokescreen for the wrenching economic change now under way: the mass purging of unproductive salary class positions from the whole landscape of government, corporate, and nonprofit bureaucracies.
You can sell Americans on anything, no matter how wretchedly unsatisfactory it is, by labeling it as progress. That’s what’s being done now, with AI being used as a justification for firing useless workers, deleting unnecessary departments, cutting office staff down to scales that actually make sense, and shutting down the classroom-to-cubicle pipeline that once poured new graduates into salary class jobs.
We can expect that process to accelerate dramatically in the years ahead.
Studying psychology at university we were encouraged to read up-to-date research; older texts were deprecated. I can say, tho, that, excepting recent American therapy offerings, I've come to understand so much more psychiatry from the old classics than from more modern offerings.
For almost a decade, Jordan has raved to me about the immense, ecstatic, and terrifying work by Tor Ulven. Jordan has been at careful, quiet work translating Ulven's bibliography; soon English readers can rejoice!
Ulven is for fans of Énard, Pynchon, and Cărtărescu.
Nick talks about how being unemployed is a struggle.
"You don't know what it's like! You have stuff to do, you get all these cool tasks, you get to hang out with people and go on Zoom calls. Meanwhile, no one will play Fortnite with me!"
Campbell, 1988, explaining why he disliked working in Chicago and almost considered leaving academia (which would have been a huge loss) due to the highly competitive environment and the idea you should write only brilliant papers.
So, it's official now. We got our formal termination notices, and normal operations of Hampshire College cease, and the "teachout" of the remaining students begins. (The great circle of life, or, . . .something)
I'll still have a couple of things to share
We have an epidemic of women who cannot find a 6’8” multi millionaire golden retriever werewolf who respects her independence but will also lead her and give her space but also romance her but only when she wants, will not judge her past and also be religious but not serious.
There are unsaturated and less popular sites that hire remote workers daily with little competition. Pay range is between $130-$250/day, and you won't be expected to join any calls.
Here's a quick list for anyone interested:
Walking is the most underrated medicine on Earth.
It lowers blood sugar, blood pressure, anxiety, and even your risk of early death.
Here's how to get the full effect with 7 simple steps:
1. Don't chase 10,000 steps.
Last year, I wrote a series on what I call the "scholar-activist" career pipeline. In short, a bunch of universities carved out huge hiring programs for this type of scholar.
But I didn't coin the term. I use it because that's how these scholars describe themselves 🧵
Been feeling bleak for the past week after I read an essay saying the market for middle-grade books has collapsed because kids can no longer read them. Two long-time publishers of middle-grades have shuttered, with more to come. We don’t appreciate what a crisis this is. +
I’d rather have Jews in positions of influence than any other group—and the results speak for themselves. History and outcomes make the case plainly: when Jewish talent, culture, and intellect have shaped institutions, economies, and ideas, the broader world has generally benefited through innovation, prosperity, and dynamism. Compare the alternatives—European aristocracies, Russian autocracies, Chinese party dictatorships, Arab theocracies, radical feminists, or communist ideologues—and the ledger is far less impressive. The question isn’t “Why Jews?” It’s “Who else has consistently delivered better?”
The people who obsessively blame Jews for every ill in the world are not diagnosing reality; they’re revealing their own weakness. If Jews truly wielded the godlike power these critics claim, resistance would be impossible—yet individuals break free and succeed every day. The truth is simpler and more uncomfortable: people who fixate on Jewish influence are usually avoiding the mirror. It’s easier to invent a grand conspiracy than to admit you’ve been outmaneuvered, outworked, or outsmarted. Pride and envy make cowards of us all. Rather than take radical responsibility for their own lives, they default to the ancient slave’s reflex: blame the more successful.
A free mind rejects that mentality entirely. You can resent those who outperform you, or you can study them. You can curse your “betters,” or you can become your own. The strongest move is to internalize the very traits that drive Jewish success: relentless intellectual curiosity, high agency, comfort with standing apart from the crowd, and an unshakable refusal to live for the approval of the mob. Call it embracing your “inner Jew,” if you like—the spirit of independent thought, excellence, and self-mastery that refuses to be reduced to cattle in the herd.
The crowd chooses the comfort of numbers and the illusion of power in the collective. They enfeeble themselves by design, then seethe at those who refuse to do the same. Real freedom begins when you stop worrying about what the sheep think and start thinking for yourself.
