I have just informed my colleagues that I will step down as @ECB President on 7 February 2027.

It has been a source of great pride to serve this institution.

I thank all of those who have supported me on this journey over the past seven years.

Amidst all the understandable joy over the change of power in Serbia, journalism must maintain a cool-headed perspective, including on the Serbian student movement and its spectacular success. For Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, I had a closer look at the foreign policy program of the Serbian student movement. It is a disaster. A summary in 8⃣ points.

„Die Generalität des deutschen Heeres ist zu einer mehrtägigen Erkundung eventueller Einsatzräume deutscher Divisionen und Brigaden an die östlichen Grenzen des NATO-Gebiets aufgebrochen. Dabei wollen die militärischen Führer der Landstreitkräfte in Estland, Lettland und Litauen Szenarien und Gegebenheiten erkunden, in denen sich ihre Kampfverbände im Falle eines russischen Angriffs zu bewegen hätten.“

"The Russians just pocket concessions. The only way to deal with the Russians is actually to impose costs on their bad behavior."

Last week, @RLHeinrichs and @peterrough sat down with @AKendallTaylor to discuss the Trump administration's approach to Russia and Ukraine.

Big day in Serbia: President Vućić was ousted in a landslide by a leaderless student movement after 14 years in power.
While Gen Z moan elsewhere in Serbia they literally squashed a strongman following 2 years of anti-corruption protests that won them the support of an ageing nation.
The final straw was Vučić pardoning thugs who got convicted for beating protestors. The students got 52%; Vućić 39%. Gen Z took over a country, basically.
Despite breathless takes by analysts (like with Hungary), it’s quite clear that Russia (& appendix Belarus) is the last dictatorship around.
Vučić allowed Serbia to become Russia’s wartime hub for special operations while at the same time supporting Ukraine immensely with arms sales.
Russia’s foothold could be eroded. The wining coalition said they would not impose sanctions on Russia but that remains to be seen.

I really want our relations – between Ukraine and America, and with all our other partners – to be strong, truly friendly, and without misunderstandings. Because without a strong America that cares about what happens in the world, the world would definitely be a worse place.

These days, people ask why Ukraine is speaking more openly and directly to the world. The answer is simple. We want others to understand us – societies, nations, as many people as possible. When people understand what is really going on, political leaders can take a stronger path – the one that can really bring peace closer. And peace is what we want more than anything.

Starshield/Starlink speed restrictions remain in place. Every day matters for Ukraine, because every Ukrainian life matters. Our people are waiting for positive news, hoping that the restrictions will be lifted and our defenders will have the capabilities they need to protect lives.
Unfortunately, as of today, nothing has changed. We continue to wait.
