Our privilege @uciradiology to host @NaineshParikhMD last week for an outstanding Grand Rounds on the emerging roles for Prostatic Artery Embolization in the setting of prostate cancer before and after radiation therapy #PAE#IRAD@SIRspecialists@SIRRFS
Does prostate artery embolization change ejaculation?
Some men notice a decrease in volume, while others don’t. Think of it like a sponge: when the prostate shrinks, fluid production may also shrink slightly.
The important part? Many men experience major relief from urinary symptoms without major surgery.
An innovative approach that had a real impact on our prostate cancer patient’s QOL. PAE also converted 52% of patients initially contraindicated for brachytherapy/SBRT without an impact on local control!
Amazing work @VaseemKhatri !

Lower urinary tract symptoms are common among men and are usually caused by BPH, overactive bladder detrusor, or both.
This Review summarizes the epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of these symptoms.

A sagittal MRI image of my patient with a significantly enlarged uterus due to multiple benign fibroid tumors. Daily pain and bloating. July is fibroid awareness month. For interventional radiologists, awareness has a dual meaning. First and foremost is spreading awareness of this benign pathology that affects so many women, the signs and symptoms, and the treatment options. Second is highlighting that there is a minimally invasive outpatient treatment called UFE that interventional radiologists perform. It is safe, effective, with more than 30 years of experience and high-quality data supporting its use. What is remarkable is despite all of that, it is tremendously under utilized in the treatment of uterine fibroids. A recent study looking at modern practice trends showed that only 3% of women with symptomatic fibroids were treated with uterine fibroid embolization or UFE. The majority underwent a hysterectomy. The reasons for this are multifactorial but if anything it highlights there is much work for us to do.
"This wouldn’t just be a physical loss – it would be an emotional one too."
In this firsthand account from @SWHR, Jennifer shares how she found an alternative option to hysterectomy when she was diagnosed with a #UterineFibroid. #FibroidAwarenessMonth.
