RETHINKING E-WASTE AS AN ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY
My recent visit to Nandi Hills reinforced something I strongly believe: e-waste is an environmental challenge, but it also presents an opportunity for skills, enterprise and jobs.
I interacted with 151 young Kenyans trained in the repair, refurbishment and reuse of phones, laptops, computers and printers, alongside responsible e-waste management.
What stood out for me is the opportunity in devices we often consider obsolete. A laptop can be repaired and used again, a phone refurbished and made affordable to another user, and components recovered and reused. With the right skills, young people can turn this into a livelihood.
Through the ICT Authority’s National Refurbishment, Assembly and e-Waste Management Programme, we are working to grow these skills while promoting responsible management of electronic equipment.
As Kenya’s digital transformation accelerates, we must also think about the full lifecycle of the devices we use. Nandi Hills demonstrated that we can address e-waste while creating economic opportunities for our young people.
I appreciate Nandi Hills MP Hon. Bernard Kitur for his partnership and support in making this initiative possible for young people in Nandi Hills Constituency.
It was a pleasure to join my colleague, Principal Secretary for TVET @Muoria_Dr, in welcoming H.E. Ms. Annalena Baerbock, President of the United Nations General Assembly (@UN_PGA), during her official visit to PC Kinyanjui Technical Training Institute.
The visit underscored the strong partnership between Kenya and the United Nations in advancing inclusive digital transformation and sustainable development.
H.E. Baerbock interacted with beneficiaries of the DigiKen Programme, which is supporting digital innovation, skills development, and platform-based enterprises across the country.
PC Kinyanjui Technical Training Institute is among the 15 Digital Innovation Hubs selected under the programme and continues to play an important role in equipping young people with future-ready digital skills.
Also present was the area Member of Parliament, Hon. @KiarieJohn; the Kenyan Permanent Representative to the UN Habitat in Nairobi, Hon @Nakhumicha_S; and Dr. Garry Conille, UN Resident Coordinator.
We had the pleasure of meeting Principal Secretary for TVET, @Muoria_Dr together with students and leadership from PC Kinyanjui Technical Training Institute, ahead of the Regional Finals of the Huawei ICT Competition 2025–2026.
The meeting highlighted the importance of collaboration between government, industry, and training institutions in preparing young talent for the future digital economy. We also celebrated the outstanding students from PC Kinyanjui who will proudly represent Kenya at the regional stage after months of intensive training under the Huawei ICT Academy.
We remain committed to empowering the next generation of ICT professionals through skills development, innovation, and strong partnerships with TVET institutions across the country.
