🚨NEW: A man (identifying as a woman) has appeared in court after two Edinburgh council workers were taken to hospital while peeling stickers off a lamppost.

• Eve Shaw, (real name Adam Shaw), 31, of Edinburgh, faces one allegation of culpable and reckless conduct.

• On 20 August two cleansing staff felt unwell after contact with a substance on unauthorised stickers on a Morningside Road column. They were discharged from hospital.

• Police Scotland said at the time that a 30-year-old "woman" had been arrested and charged.

• In 2023, Adam was cleared after threatening to shoot a gender critical MP after he convinced the court he was just joking.

The Archbishop could hardly have made a more tone-deaf choice. Christians in Pakistan live under blasphemy laws that Tahir Ashrafi has openly stated he supports.

Shama Bibi and Shahzad Masih were a young Christian couple who were beaten and burned alive in a brick kiln after being accused of blasphemy. Shama was pregnant.

For someone who speaks a great deal about women’s rights and protecting the vulnerable, the hypocrisy is difficult to miss.

I’ve seen this picture several times over the last few days, and every time it hits as hard as the first.

The juxtaposition says everything. In the West, a woman can become an Archbishop. In Islam women are being reduced to anonymous figures buried beneath black, head-to-toe coverings.

You couldn’t ask for a clearer illustration of two radically different visions of women’s place in society.

And yet in the West, we’re constantly told we must embrace every culture as though every culture is interchangeable with our own, and as though there are no meaningful differences between them.

Well, no. They’re not all the same. And I refuse to believe that treating women like this is something we should simply accept as normal or okay.
