“The Chinese Communist Party aims to catch up and surpass the West. It believes there have been four industrial revolutions that determine the fate of nations,” says @RushDoshi, director of CFR’s China Strategy Initiative and assistant professor at Georgetown University’s Walsh School of Foreign Service.
“And now we’re in the fourth: quantum, biotech, and, of course, robotics and AI, which China is determined to win not just for the sake of prosperity, but for the sake of relative power.”
Finland is the Happiest country in the World for the 9th year running. We also climbed up the world brand index from 7th to 5th.
I am often asked why we do well in these rankings.
I do not think there is a magic potion, but it helps to have a society which strives towards freedom, equality and justice.
The basis of it all is a welfare society, a robust education system, a sense of security and a close attachment to nature.
There is no such thing as a perfectly happy society, but providing some building blocks that give us a chance to live a meaningful life, to help others, will nudge us in the right direction during the journey of life.
SCOOP: The Trump admin is implementing a detailed strategy to push Western Hemisphere countries to stop using Cuba’s (lucrative) medical missions program, according to a State Dept memo: w/ @ebazaileimil https://t.co/MJ18Af5wJn
“The diminutive Doral summit was symbolic of Trump’s overtly ideological approach to the Americas, and a reminder of the costs of that strategy,” my colleague @rfeinberg2012 writes in our latest @StimsonCenter analysis.

Cuba is in crisis. If you want to do more than complain on X, these American organizations are on the ground, getting aid and opportunity directly to the Cuban people. Your support matters more than ever.

Our troops are being told that war with Iran is part of a biblical prophecy for Armageddon that Trump was anointed by God to carry out.
This is what happens when Christian Nationalism infiltrates the government. And people are dying because of it.
Wise reminder from @MaloneySuzanne. Also important to recognize that it will be a long time before we know. In Iraq Bush declared "mission accomplished" a month and a half into the war and failure was not fully clear for months and years to come. In Libya, it took 7 months of bombing before Qadafy fell, and then many more months before it became clear that early declarations of victory there were premature. Success in Afghanistan was repeatedly announced or promised before the US and others acquiesced--20 years later--to the return of the very Taliban government they had overthrown. We don't know how Iran will turn out but any confident judgements about that in coming days, weeks and months--whether declaring victory or concluding disaster--will be premature.
The @UN Security Council stands alone in its authority to act on behalf of all member countries on questions of peace & security.
It alone adopts decisions binding on all.
No other body or ad-hoc coalition can legally require all countries to comply with decisions on peace & security.
Its responsibility is singular.
Its obligation is universal.
That is why reform is essential.
That is why we must act without delay to enhance the representation & effectiveness of the Security Council.
While oil and drugs have dominated coverage of Venezuela, it's important to look at gold mining too. Armed groups and corrupt officials have profited from operations, while ecosystems and communities suffer. I wrote this last yr about some of the impacts:

5 years ago today, our Capitol was attacked. A year ago, Trump pardoned the worst attackers as a reward for their violence.
You should know them.
1/ Let's start with David Dempsey - he was out for blood: pepper sprayed officers, stomped on their heads, beat them with poles.
A reminder that the famine in Gaza is NOT due to a lack of available food. It is due to Israel's genocidal refusal to allow that food into Gaza, let alone to allow UNRWA, with by far the largest capacity, to deliver it. https://t.co/jbbIwF5l9u

In 1948, more than 700,000 Palestinians were displaced from their towns and villages. These events are known as the #Nakba.
77 years later, Palestinians continue to be forcibly displaced.
Since the war in #Gaza began, about 90% of the population have been forced to flee their homes. Some have been displaced 10 times or more.
#NakbaDay
This fundamental message applies to so many situations around the world and in our own personal lives. thank you@harsh_mander for all you do to remind us that love must conquer hate.
The only fitting response to hate is love.
In fact the victims of the terror attack in pahalgam and Kashmir responded, despite their trauma, with love.
@harsh_mander
Today marks the 77th anniversary of Nakba Day, commemorating the displacement of 700,000+ Palestinians in the events surrounding the establishment of Israel in 1948.
This anniversary is taking place amid ongoing widespread Israeli atrocities and mass displacement of Palestinians.
