A few weeks ago, I was staying at an airport hotel in Nashville. I went to sleep with the rental car parked outside and woke up to an email from the rental company telling me that I had returned it.

Except I hadn't.

The email was a final receipt, complete with the exact mileage I had driven and confirmation that the tank was full. For a moment I thought it was some bizarre glitch, or that I had somehow wandered into the Twilight Zone. The car was still sitting outside the hotel.

When I actually went to return it, the attendant couldn't process the return because, according to the system, the car had already been returned.

Anyway, the long and short of it is that by staying at a hotel near the airport, I had apparently entered whatever geofenced electronic perimeter the rental company uses to detect returns. The system simply assumed I had returned the car.

And the car itself, which was just a totally ordinary GMC, had obviously transmitted all this information about itself, without me knowing anything about it.

Walmart exposed AGAIN for shorting their product weights, this time with their Great Value bacon

If you take unopened packages of their bacon and place them directly on the scale, all 3 are short but it doesn’t stop there

If you cut open the packages and weigh each one of them on the scale, they are all short about 2-3 strips of bacon in weight

“So we're talking about 3 strips of bacon, which means every seven to eight packages short equals a free 100% profit package”

You can do the math and tell that at scale this ends up being a massive profit for Walmart

It’s intentional

I actually did the math on this:

Walmart sells about 8–12 million packs of bacon per month. If they short about 3 pieces per pack, or about 2.5 ounces

This means Walmart makes an extra estimated $8 million per month

This is just one product….

Thank you all for the birthday wishes. Anyone who knows me knows I hate my birthday — and turning 29 makes me feel like an old geezer.

But I got to spend the day on a meteor cruise in the Mediterranean with 17 friends and family — the same gang I was driving back from the eclipse with at 3 a.m. last night.

It means the world to have so many loved ones who, for whatever reason, trust me enough to fly halfway across the world and blindly trust the process. Many of my friends aren’t meteorologists — but they’re ride or dies for whatever wild schemes I cook up.

In middle school, I couldn’t imagine having friends like that. Now I can’t imagine life without them.

After a year of skyrocketing gas and electric bills, Eversource, New England’s largest utility, just reported surging profits: $1.69 billion for 2025, more than double the $812 million they made in 2024.

Yes, 2024 took a $524 million hit from selling their stake in two offshore wind projects, which made last year’s numbers look lower. But Eversource itself says rising gas and electric rates helped drive higher revenues this year. Their natural gas business alone saw profits jump 24% to $360.5 million, thanks in large part to rate increases “to recover continued investment in our natural gas infrastructure.”

A big piece of that is the Gas System Enhancement Plan (GSEP). Under this program, gas companies get to charge customers right away (with guaranteed profit) for accelerating the replacement of old pipes. GSEP spending hit $901 million in 2025, even as the state aims to phase out residential natural gas by 2050.

Eversource says the profit jump mainly reflects the absence of those one-time 2024 losses and that affordability is still a priority (pointing to bill credits and assistance programs). Meanwhile, lawmakers still haven’t taken action on GSEP despite the bill pain many of us felt last winter.

Senate Bill S.3143, which would phase out the costly GSEP program and save ratepayers an estimated $1.46 billion, remains stuck in a House-Senate conference committee because the two chambers still disagree on key details. The longer they wait to pass it, the more Eversource continues to reap the benefits of the current system.
