Yesterday, i formally wrote to the Expert Committee, CAQM (consisting of Professors of different IITs and AIIMS Delhi and industry experts) on some measures to abate the vehicular pollution.
Though chemistry part is there for reference, focus is on urban mobility governance.1/2
Urban transport planning requires a systematic assessment of corridor demand, passenger flows, and capacity utilisation.
A metro is not a transport plan. It is a capacity intervention. Know the difference.
The sequence is simple: bus → BRT → metro.
Bus services establish baseline ridership and reveal travel patterns. BRT introduces dedicated right-of-way and prioritises high-capacity bus movement as demand grows. Metro becomes necessary when corridor demand exceeds the practical capacity of surface transit.
Infrastructure investment must follow a clear capacity-development trajectory, supported by ridership evidence, land-use integration, and last-mile connectivity. The objective is to build a transport system around observed and projected mobility needs.
This method also eliminates the financial burden cities have to face.

DELHI METRO AUGMENTING TRAIN TRIPS, INTENSIFYING DRIVES TO COMBAT POLLUTION
In the wake of implementation of GRAP-I in Delhi from today, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will be increasing train trips on weekdays (Mon-Fri) starting tomorrow i.e, from 22nd October 2026. DMRC will be also intensifying anti-pollution drives at its construction sites and surrounding areas across the national capital to help mitigate the pollution.
From tomorrow 22nd October 2026, Delhi Metro will be running 20 additional trips on its network for weekdays to encourage more and more people to use public transport than their personal vehicles. Similarly, a number of specific activities will be taken up to ensure decrease in dust levels inside construction sites, removal of road dust from the surrounding roads, removal of garbage from footpaths and road medians etc.
Delhi Metro’s engineers will be inspecting the construction sites as well as the surrounding roads thoroughly to ensure that all construction materials are properly covered and the wheel wash facilities for outgoing vehicles are in working condition.
These drives will be conducted in addition to a number of measures already taken up by DMRC to handle the issue of pollution.
Approximately 31 kilometres of city roads are under DMRC’s temporary jurisdiction currently. These roads have been taken over by DMRC to facilitate Metro construction work in the vicinity. Most of these roads have already been repaired by DMRC to ensure that they do not contribute to any further pollution in the city.
In total, over 250 anti-smog guns/ mist guns have been installed at the construction sites, stations and office buildings to decrease dust levels. Daily inspections are being conducted by DMRC’s Environment department to ensure that all environmental norms are adequately followed.
Big news for hepatitis B!
After the remarkable success of curing hepatitis C, we are finally making real progress toward a functional cure for hepatitis B!
The FDA just approved bepirovirsen (Hibsago), a first-in-class antisense oligonucleotide, following two phase 3 trials published in NEJM.
About 19% of patients achieved functional cure (sustained HBsAg loss and undetectable HBV DNA after stopping treatment), compared with 0% on placebo.
The treatment involves 6 months of weekly injections and is currently approved for selected patients without cirrhosis.
19% may not sound like much, but I think this is a meaningful step forward.
Hepatitis B is a major cause of cirrhosis and liver cancer (HCC). Hopefully, treatments like this will eventually help us prevent more cases of both.
We still have a long way to go, but this is very encouraging progress!
What if the future of cargo transportation could fly just above the water?
As reported in Moneycontrol, IIT Madras-incubated startup Waterfly Technologies is preparing to conduct the first ocean trial of its electric-powered flying boat, Hummingbird, between Chennai and Puducherry by December 2026.
Designed to skim close to the water’s surface, Hummingbird uses the aerodynamic principle of ground effect to reduce drag and improve efficiency. The 300-kg craft has progressed from an earlier 30-kg prototype to a larger design, with potential applications in coastal and island cargo transport, including offshore oil field logistics.
With an estimated range of around 1,000 km on a single charge, the startup aims to make cargo transportation more cost-effective, targeting costs below Rs 10 per tonne-kilometre.
From innovative prototypes to real-world ocean trials, this is another glimpse into how the IIT Madras startup ecosystem is advancing homegrown deeptech solutions for the future of transportation.

IIT Roorkee Study Reveals Growing Convergence of Flood and Drought Vulnerabilities Across India
A study led by researchers at IIT Roorkee reveals an increasing overlap in district-level vulnerability to floods and droughts, highlighting the need for integrated climate-risk planning and multi-hazard preparedness.
Published in npj Natural Hazards, the study analysed 591 districts across India and found that, by 2011, more than one-fifth of districts were highly vulnerable to floods, nearly one-fifth to droughts, and more than one in ten fell towards the higher end of the Multi-Hazard Vulnerability Index (MHVI).
Led by Prof. Mohit Prakash Mohanty, with researchers Priyanka Tripathy, Dev Anand Thakur and Vittal Hari, the study identifies growing multi-hazard hotspots, particularly across eastern and northern India. The findings underscore the importance of district-level assessments in strengthening climate adaptation, disaster risk reduction and resilient development.
Supported by the Department of Science & Technology (DST) through ICARS at IIT Roorkee, the research advances evidence-based approaches to identifying vulnerable regions and prioritising climate resilience measures.

"...The actual art of medicine lies in listening to patients, understanding their fears and responding with compassion. This human connection, he suggested, remains an essential to provide effective healthcare to patients."
"Dr. Guleria believes there are two sides of medicine, one is the science and the other is its art. He believes that scientific advances have strengthened our ability to treat illnesses but remain incomplete without the art". 1/2

A recent study by @TheICCT & @KSEBLtd on charging infrastructure requirements along NH-66 estimates that, by 2030, battery-electric trucks will require 90 chargers with 12.5 MW of installed capacity and an investment of ₹19 crore.
This study by @harsimrankaur09, Sajin Ismail(KSEBL), Aviral Yadav & Anand RM is the first corridor-level charging assessment for an Indian freight highway.
By 2050, the estimated requirement rises to 1,939 chargers and ₹338 crore in investment, with Kochi, Kozhikode and Kollam identified as priority charging nodes.
