The Centre may offer Chennai and Kolkata airports under the PPP model next, to upgrade facilities to match other major metros. These are the only big airports still run directly by AAI; Delhi, Hyderabad (GMR), Mumbai (Adani) and Bengaluru (Fairfax) are already private. Tamil Nadu’s push and West Bengal’s interest have strengthened the case. Under OMDA, private players handle operations and development while AAI keeps air traffic control, earning fees from traffic and upfront payments. Recently, 11 regional airports were also approved for private handover.
