Today is the martyrdom day of Sivaganga King Muthu Vaduganatha Thevar, husband of Velu Nachiyar.

He was among the earliest kings of Tamilakam to challenge British authority. He strongly resisted their attempts to force the Palayams into paying tribute and to gradually usurp the samasthanams.

He defeated the British in their attempt to capture Madurai, inviting the ire of the British Governor. They later launched another attack against him with the help of the traitor Yusuf Khan, aka Marudha Nayagam. Muthu Vaduganatha Thevar defeated him too and drove him out.

The British then offered a ceasefire, which Muthu Vaduganatha Thevar accepted in good faith. With the ceasefire in effect, he went unarmed to Kalayar Kovil for darshan. It was then that the British forces launched a surprise attack. Muthu Vaduganatha Thevar and his second wife, Gowri Nachiyar were shot dead by Captain Abraham Bonjour.

But the flame of resistance did not die. It was carried forward by Queen Velu Nachiyar, who would go on to become one of the earliest and fiercest voices of Bharath’s freedom struggle.

India has introduced a new safeguard against industrial water pollution: Updated environmental rules now require caustic soda plants using membrane cell technology to pass a fish survival test for toxic wastewater, with at least 90% fish survival over 96 hours.

Excavations at Purana Qila, conducted during 2013-14, 2017-18, and 2022–23, revealed a continuous cultural sequence spanning nearly 2,500 years, making it the only known ancient site in Delhi .

The excavations brought to light evidence from the pre-Mauryan period onwards, followed by the Mauryan, Sunga, Saka-Kushana, Gupta, Post-Gupta, Rajput, Sultanate, and Mughal periods.

Among the significant discoveries were a Mauryan-period ring well, a Kushana-period house complex, Gupta-period seals and sealings, a Rajput-period Vaikuntha Vishnu image, an intricately carved miniature image of Ganesha in soapstone, a circular terracotta plaque depicting Gaja Lakshmi, coins from different periods, and a Kushana-period gold foil.

Painted Grey Ware pottery, including an almost complete bowl, was also recovered from a stratified context, providing important archaeological evidence associated with the site's earliest phases of occupation.

The excavations further uncovered a ring well with terracotta rings, post holes likely associated with a water-drawing mechanism, and a terracotta-lined drain, offering valuable insights into the settlement's water management system.

In Telangana’s Sri Rajarajeshwara Swamy Temple (Donabanda village), the hereditary archaka Polasa Srisailam, whose family built the temple generations ago, went to High Court to stop the Endowments Department from auctioning 15+ acres of temple land.

Single Judge Justice G.M. Mohiuddin refused interim stay.

The court’s reasoning? Under the HRCE Act, the archaka is just a “servant of the deity”, not owner or trustee. All temple lands legally vest in the “deity”.

Archaka can only bid like any outsider to cultivate his own family’s land.

This is the state of Archaka in Bharat! 😢
