At the #OW2024 opening last night, @BrocqSarah totally nailed it:
“We offer acute treatment for a chronic condition and that simply does not work.”

#SELECTstudy is out in @NEJM and at #AHA23 today. It's pretty much unmistakable now that obesity treatment can help people lead longer, healthier lives. Time has come to tear down the barriers to equitable access to care.

Yes, we're making progress in overcoming #obesity. But no, we're not yet ready to take it seriously as a #ChronicDisease.

Is Metabolic Surgery Having an Identity Crisis?
• The answer is “no.”
• Anti-obesity Meds (AOMs) are very effective now (>20% WL)
• Head-to-head studies AOM vs Surgery have not yet been conducted
• Response to AOMs treatment varies:
- With DM can have less response (10%WL)
- With morbid obesity may not be enough
- Adherence long-term may be challenging (cost, etc.)
• SG and RYGB have robust data on efficacy and safety long-term
• Treatment of obesity is not a one-size-fits-all (multi-modal options are needed)
• Surgery remains the most effective and durable anti-obesity intervention
• Surgery still widely underutilized despite large body of evidence (long-term efficacy and safety)
