Math classes really are like "ok so if we use Euler's method to solve Euler's equation then, by making use of Euler's identity, we can then plug that into Euler's other equation and deduce that Euler's inequality holds so long as the coefficients are Eulerian numbers"

Upon solving that, we get x = 8. Hence, the capacity of the tank is 36 L. But yeah, mind reading shouldn't be a part of Math.
@stevenstrogatz Agreed! My interpretation is, he was trying to create a relationship between the number of pails used in each case. If he used x pails in the 5-liter case, by saying "another 4 more pails", he's trying to imply Nelson used (x+4) gallons in the 3-liter case.
