Why is Ernest U. Gambaro (BSAAE ’60, MSAAE ’61) a Purdue Engineering hero? He and his wife, Monica, provided a transformational gift to @PurdueAeroAstro to endow and name the school’s graduate program.
Seven years ago today, on Feb. 16, 2019, the Gambaros were honored in Naples, Florida, during a President’s Council event for their deep commitment and strong support of the school and the lasting significance of their gift. Gambaro credits AAE for helping him build a foundation for his achievements.
At The @AerospaceCorp, he contributed to the design of the nation’s premier orbital reconnaissance system. After earning a law degree from Loyola Marymount University in 1975, Gambaro served as an attorney in Aerospace’s corporate law department before becoming assistant general counsel for Computer Sciences Corporation in 1980.
In 1988, Gambaro co-founded Infonet Services Corporation, a pioneering venture that became the world’s largest provider of secure data services. Under his leadership, Infonet experienced exponential growth, culminating in a landmark public offering on the New York Stock Exchange in 1999, valued at $10 billion.
Purdue recognized Gambaro with an Outstanding Aerospace Engineer Award in 2016 and a Distinguished Engineering Alumnus Award in 2021.

Why is Julie Kramer White (BS @PurdueAeroAstro '90) a Purdue Engineering hero? Five years ago, in January 2021, she was appointed the director of engineering at Johnson Space Center in Houston — home of the engineers who designed all of the Apollo lunar missions, including the historic Apollo 11 flight in which Commander Neil Armstrong famously said, “Houston. Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed.” JSC also is the facility where NASA monitored nine Gemini and more than 100 Space Shuttle missions.
Her time at JSC dates back to when she was 19 and completing a co-op there. Today, she has logged 30+ years at NASA, specializing in structural design, analysis, certification and vehicle systems engineering. Currently, she oversees critical engineering support for all of NASA’s human spaceflight programs, including the International Space Station, Orion, Commercial Crew Program and NASA’s latest lunar exploration campaign. Additionally, Kramer White was a founding member of NASA’s Engineering and Safety Center (NESC) following the Columbia accident.
