C is not just a language. It is sort of THE operating system interface when it comes to Unix and Unix-like systems (including Linux... maybe?).
We often debate "C vs. Rust" or "C vs. C++" as if they are just tools in a toolbox. But we overlook a massive structural reality.
For most of the world, the Operating System is the C Library.
Consider the difference between Linux and everyone else:
Linux is the outlier. It publicly documents its raw System Call ABI, allowing languages (like Go) to bypass C entirely and talk directly to the kernel.
macOS & BSDs are different. Their system interface is officially defined by Libc. If you bypass the C library and call the kernel directly, you are likely breaking the contract.
But it goes deeper.
POSIX is not an OS implementation standard. It is largely a C standard.
The POSIX specification doesn't describe raw syscall numbers or register values. It describes C function signatures.
* It defines printf(), not the assembly required to print.
* It defines <unistd.h>, not the kernel trap.
To be a "POSIX-compliant" OS means, fundamentally, to host a C library (along with a bunch of shell utilities, for example, but that's a different topic).
Even if you don't write C, you are using it.
Python? The standard implementation (CPython) is C.
Java? The JVM talks to the OS and hardware via C.
Rust? It can only talk to the outside world because it mastered the C ABI (Application Binary Interface).
Can we ever leave C behind?
If the definition of the Operating System is tied to the C Standard Library, then "replacing C" isn't just about changing languages. Itโs about redefining what an OS interface looks like.
Should we? Maybe. Memory safety issues in C account for a lot major security vulnerabilities.
We are trying to replace the Latin of computing. And Latin has a habit of sticking around.

It's so important to find work that you love. Work that feels uniquely you.

You can have real enthusiasm, real potential, and maybe even good instincts but without the underlying foundations, every โinsightโ you think is profound is actually already solved, trivial, or plain wrong.
Itโs like trying to optimize a system you donโt understand, or debating Rustโs ownership model when youโve never built anything non-toy in Rust.
Once you learn the fundamentals:
- your arguments become sharper
- your intuitions become tighter
- your creativity becomes real, not accidental
and experts finally take you seriously
The irony is that the more you learn, the less you feel like arguing because you realize how much of the debate is just noise from people skipping step zero.
Real analysis, distributed systems, compilers, cryptography all the same pattern:
you canโt skip the basics and expect to contribute meaningfully.
Learn the foundations โ then come debate.

Black Holes Instead of Colliders
A group of astrophysicists says that black holes can collide particles at energies beyond what the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) can reach, and that suitable observations could therefore test entirely new territory. This is somewhat surprising because while black holes are known to dramatically accelerate particles in their accretion disk, these particles all move in the same direction, so one doesnโt expect the collisions to have extremely high energies. The LHC, in contrast, collides two beams head on, creating extremely high collision energies.
However, in a paper that just appeared in PRL, the authors say that supermassive black holes which spin sufficiently fast have collide particles that spiral inwards from the accretion disk with particles that come in straight without spiralling. They say that these collisions can reach energies in the range of up to 100 TeV, which is about 10 times higher than the LHC, and the flux is high enough for the results to be observable from earth. The collision results that are the easiest to observe should be neutrinos.
