Quantum Device Lab

@QuDev (the Quantum Device Lab of ETH Zurich), led by @AndreasAtETH, we explore #quantum circuits for #computing, #communication and #sensing technology.

[Andreas Wallraff @AndreasAtETH]

Curious about developing #quantum communication hardware with #superconducting #circuits?

Interested in doing a PhD with a leading lab in quantum science and technology?

The Quantum Device Lab (@qudev, https://t.co/cF4jsoFdYJ) at the Department of Physics (@ETH_physics), ETH Zurich, member of the Quantum Center (@ETHQuantumCntr) and the @ETH Zürich - @psich_en Paul Scherrer Institut Quantum Computing Hub is looking for highly motivated Doctoral Students for the development of a superconducting qubit quantum network and research in quantum networking applications.

We have done the first experiments on quantum state transfer between qubits housed in different cryogenic systems (https://t.co/FCVYFB2PcE), performed the first loophole-free Bell inequality violation with superconducting circuits (https://t.co/wmcL97KWVW), and demonstrated the first repeated quantum error correction in the surface code (https://t.co/3ZwDlJdcjU).

Advance quantum science with superconducting circuits. Join the team!

Learn about what our lab's alumni from the past 20 years are up to.

[Andreas Wallraff @AndreasAtETH]

This year our Quantum Device Lab (@qudev , https://t.co/cF4jsoFdYJ) has completed its first 20 years at the Department of Physics (@ETH_physics) of @ETH Zürich, since six years we are also part of the Quantum Center, @ETHQuantumCntr, and since five years we co-run the @ETH_en Zürich - @psich_en Paul Scherrer Institut #Quantum Computing Hub.
One of the aspects for the whole team to be proud of is the many successes of our current and former lab members.
On the occasion of our lab's 20th anniversary, I give a shout out to former lab members who have moved on to graduate school, who now do postdocs, who started their own labs as faculty members, who have started companies, who have moved on to work in the quantum industry or in the tech industry.
Today, I start with the professors. There are quite a few of them. Check out the article linked below.

Are you curious about the insights we gained when building our 30-m-long cryogenic microwave-frequency quantum link which we used to do a loophole free Bell test with superconducting qubits? This system also serves as a role model for how to interconnect devices in a large-scale modular superconducting #quantum #computer. In the new paper A Modular Cryogenic Link for Microwave Quantum Communication Over Distances of Tens of Meters out on @arxiv today we describe some of our learnings from constructing the system.

The work was done at the Quantum Device Lab (https://t.co/cF4jsoFdYJ) of the Department of Physics (@ETH_physics) and the @ETHQuantumCntr of @ETH_en Zurich by Josua D. Schär, @simonstorz , Paul Magnard (now at Isentroniq), @PhilippKurpiers (now at Rohde & Schwarz), Janis Lütolf, Melvin Gehrig, @BesseJC , Anatoly Kulikov, and @AndreasAtETH with support from the European Research Council (ERC), and @ETH Zürich.

Check this out! It's been 20 years!

[Andreas Wallraff @AndreasAtETH]

Happy 20th anniversary @qudev! On April 1, 2026 our #Quantum #Device #Lab (https://t.co/cF4jsoFdYJ) celebrates its 20th anniversary as a lab at the Department of Physics (@ETH_physics) of @ETH_en Zürich, now part of the Quantum Center @ETHQuantumCntr and the @ETH Zürich - @psich_en Paul Scherrer Institut Quantum Computing Hub.
On April 1, 2006 our research work started with the first master student and a couple of graduate students.
If you are curious about our #research, check out our #papers (https://t.co/GbEzyNnj9t) or #talks (https://t.co/GbEzyNnj9t) from the past 20 years. We also had a large number of students, researchers, and staff who contributed to the success of our lab, more than a few hundred in total. Many of them are now running their own labs, or work in the quantum industry and beyond.
Below you find a picture of our 20th from 2026 and 1st anniversary (with cake and candle) from 2007 with @peterleek (CSO of Oxford Quantum Circuits @OQC_Tech), @fink_johannes (Professor at Institute of Science and Technology Austria @ISTAustria), Gabriel Puebla-Hellmann (GM at QZabre LLC), Martin Göppel, Romeo Bianchetti, Lars Steffen (Manager at @EraneosNL), Matthias Baur (Principal Scientist at ABB). And the team photos from 2016, and 2025.
If I find time, I will cover a bit more of the lab history on the occasion.

This week 20 years ago our paper Strong coupling of a single photon to a superconducting qubit using circuit quantum electrodynamics appeared in @Nature. Take a look at it here https://t.co/6kDZkbopIX or free-to-read here https://t.co/DxJ2VWuLyS.
It coined the term circuit QED and started a new field of research. Circuit QED enables state-of-the-art #quantum optics experiments at microwave frequencies, plays an essential role in #quantum information processing and communication with superconducting circuits, and has enabled a wide range of hybrid quantum systems exploration.
Which one is your favorite current or past circuit QED experiment?
