In a bold move to curb the unchecked rise of artificial intelligence, Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Greg Casar have announced the 'Ban Artificial Superintelligence Act.'

This aggressive legislative proposal seeks to permanently ban the development and deployment of 'superintelligent' AI—defined as systems matching or exceeding human cognitive abilities—and temporarily pause other advanced AI work.

Under the bill, individuals who violate the ban could face up to 20 years in prison, a severe penalty on par with unlawfully developing nuclear weapons.

Proponents argue that the unpredictable growth of tech models poses catastrophic risks, making a cabinet-level regulatory agency necessary to monitor and safely halt hazardous tech. Critics, however, warn that criminalizing AI development would devastate American innovation and hand a massive geopolitical advantage to foreign adversaries like China.

The debate highlights the deep divide between urgent safety regulations and the fear of falling behind in the global technological arms race.

UBTECH has opened a new smart factory in China that can produce one robot about every 10 minutes.

It blew my mind.

AI is making competent answers available to almost everyone, which sounds entirely positive until you consider what happens to the abilities we stop practising.

I use AI constantly, so this is not an argument for returning to typewriters. It is an argument for being more deliberate about which parts of our thinking we hand over.

AI Obesity begins quietly. You stop forming an opinion before prompting, wrestling with a problem before requesting a solution, or sitting with uncertainty long enough to discover what you actually think. The output may improve while the thinking behind it becomes weaker.

This will also change how people are evaluated. Recruiters will not need a magical detector to identify AI-generated work. They can simply ask candidates to explain their reasoning, challenge an assumption, or defend a decision once the conversation moves beyond the prepared answer.

That is where borrowed intelligence becomes visible.

When answers become abundant, original judgment becomes scarce.

Before your next prompt, write down your own hypothesis first. Let AI challenge and expand your thinking, but do not let it replace the struggle that develops it.
