When I first came to India, the space industry was closed to private players.
The most well-known "startup" at that time was TeamIndus. Skyroot didn't exist.
A year later, in 2018, Skyroot was founded. Private companies in India couldn't launch rockets yet, but Pawan and Bharath forged ahead regardless, optimistic that liberalisation would happen someday.
Then, in 2020, it did. Indian companies were finally free to compete with American, Russian, European, and Chinese startups. They could build their own launch vehicles. And satellites. At an undisclosed location in the United States, Elon swallowed hard.
I was publishing videos about Indian companies on YouTube at this point. I remember thinking, "Making content about these spacetech developments is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."
Now, ~6 years later, Skyroot has gifted India with the biggest white pill of all time. While the world watched, a team of ~1,000+ Indian optimists (with an average age of 28) flawlessly executed an orbital rocket launch.
No private space company IN THE WORLD has ever done this on their first try. As I write this, I have goosebumps. I feel incredibly privileged to have been able to witness this firsthand. I also feel inspired by the resilience, ingenuity, and wherewithal of the entire Skyroot team.
The next chapter of India's space journey has officially begun.

India has become very good at adding renewable generation.
Next bottleneck is storing that energy economically after the sun goes down.
Lithium-ion batteries are excellent for EVs where weight & fast charging matter. But for grid, economics are different. Utilities care more about cost per kWh stored, lifespan, safety, and ability to discharge for long durations.
That's where I think iron-air batteries could find a place.
Iron is abundant, inexpensive, & doesn't come with same geopolitical supply chain concerns as lithium, nickel, or cobalt.
I love seeing Indian startups working on the chemistry itself rather than just assembling battery packs 🇮🇳
🇮🇳 India just built a radar that outranges anything currently flying on the Su-30MKI.
It's called the Hawk-I-2700, made by Chennai-based Data Patterns.
It can spot a large aircraft from 350 km away and lock onto something as small as one square metre from 200 km out.
That's a serious upgrade over the ageing Russian Bars radar still sitting on India's Sukhois today.
It's now up against DRDO's own Virupaksha radar for a spot on the Super Sukhoi upgrade.
The difference is that Hawk-I-2700 wasn't built by the state. It was built entirely by a private company, from scratch.
If it gets picked, it won't just give the Su-30MKI a second life. It'll prove India's private sector can build the kind of radar that used to only come from government labs.
Iran's Shahed drone (Shahed-238) moves at 520km/h. This makes it very difficult to intercept.
India now has an answer to Shahed.
Hyderabad-based Apollyon Dynamics is developing Nightshade ADX-1, a jet-powered UAV that:
- Strikes at 700km/h
- Has a 70kg MTOW
- Travels 150km
Meet Manish Seth, an automotive engineer who spent 15 years building cars for Ford, GM, Volkswagen, and Tata Motors before deciding to rebuild the drivetrain itself.
He started in 2004 as a campus hire at Tata Motors, working on suspension and brakes. From there he moved through Engineering Manager roles at GM and Opel in Germany, then spent 7 years and 11 months at Ford as Development Manager, leading suspension launches for the Fiesta, Figo, Focus, and Ecosport across Europe and the US.
In February 2020, he walked away from corporate auto to found Volektra, building rare earth-free, software-defined drivetrains for anything between a bike and a car. Two years later he added Vollkit, an e-bike venture. In January 2026, he co-founded Vimag Labs to redefine electric motors without rare earth materials.
Fifteen years inside the machine taught him exactly where it needed to change.

@vimaglabs has built an electric motor that removes magnets entirely.
Instead, it uses software to generate dynamic magnetic field - which then spins the rotor.
Vimag's motor already matches the performance of conventional motor.
In the future, they can basically improve the performance by providing an OTA update - just like your smartphones.
And since it only uses things like copper, steel and standard electronics - it can be built fully indigenously right here in India.
They are already testing their electric motor with two wheeler manufacturers and a three-wheeler powertrain supplier.
And they plan to ship 1,000 to 10,000 motors by the end of this year.
It's a shame no major film has been made about Biju Patnaik. He lived a life that sounds almost fictional:
In 1938, he flew his entire wedding procession by aircraft to Rawalpindi for his marriage to Gyanwati Sethi (who became the first Indian woman to hold a commercial pilot’s license, and the couple later flew daring missions together.)
While serving in the Royal Indian Air Force (including as head of Air Transport Command), he secretly ferried freedom fighters like Jayaprakash Narayan, Ram Manohar Lohia, and Aruna Asaf Ali to their hideouts. He also airdropped 'Quit India' leaflets to Indian troops while evacuating British families.
The British once jailed him for transporting nationalist leaders and distributing anti-British literature but also honored him for bravery in evacuating civilians from Japanese-occupied Burma.
During WWII, he flew daring missions delivering arms and supplies to Soviet forces in Stalingrad, and over the treacherous 'Hump' route to China in
support of Chinese Nationalist forces against the Japanese.
In July 1947, he and his wife flew a Dakota into Indonesia, landed on an improvised airstrip while evading Dutch anti-aircraft fire, rescued Prime Minister Sutan Sjahrir, refuelled using abandoned Japanese fuel, and flew him safely to India via Singapore.
A couple of months later, during the Pakistani invasion of Kashmir, he airlifted one of the first Indian troops into Srinagar.
The same year he founded Kalinga Airlines, one of India's earliest private airlines.
As Odisha CM post-1962 India-China war, he secretly visited CIA headquarters at Langley to forge a covert India-US partnership against China, which led to the Aviation Research Centre (ARC) at Charbatia, which supported U-2 recon missions over Tibet.
He was also a legendary administrator and statesman, laying much of the foundation of Odisha's industrial empire (mines, ports, heavy industries etc).
When he passed away, Indonesia observed 7 days of state mourning. Russia observed 1 day. He remains the only person in Indian history whose body was draped in the national flags of 3 nations - India, Indonesia, and Russia.
Few public figures have left such a footprint.
His extraordinary life needs to be brought to the big screen.
