Twenty years ago we invaded Iraq. The war killed many innocent Iraqis and Americans. It destroyed the oldest Christian populations in the world. It cost over $1 trillion, and turned Iraq into a satellite of Iran. It was an unforced disaster, and I pray that we learn its lessons.
An appeal to European leaders from a lifetime humanitarian: as you discuss boosting defense spending please don’t overlook humanitarian aid, which faces devastating cuts.
Aid, too, is about keeping your countries safe. Aid promotes stability. And a stable world is a safer world.
The vote by the Israeli Parliament (Knesset) against @UNRWA this evening is unprecedented and sets a dangerous precedent. It opposes the UN Charter and violates the State of Israel’s obligations under international law.
This is the latest in the ongoing campaign to discredit UNRWA and delegitimize its role towards providing human-development assistance and services to #Palestine Refugees.
These bills will only deepen the suffering of Palestinians, especially in #Gaza where people have been going through more than a year of sheer hell.
It will deprive over 650,000 girls & boys there from education, putting at risk an entire generation of children.
These bills increase the suffering of the Palestinians & are nothing less than collective punishment.
Putting an end to UNRWA & its services will not strip the Palestinians from their refugee status. That status is protected by another UN General Assembly resolution until a fair and lasting solution is found to the plight of the Palestinians.
Failing to push back these bills will weaken our common multilateral mechanism established after World War 2.
This should be a concern to all.
Don’t believe politicians using elections to stigmatize refugees and promise to “get rid of all immigrants”. They are just after your votes.
We can deal effectively with people on the move and respect their rights instead of invoking brutal measures which are wrong and useless.
Today I saw long lines of blocked relief trucks waiting to be let into Gaza.
It’s time to truly flood Gaza with life-saving aid.
The choice is clear: surge or starvation.
Let’s choose the side of help, the side of hope & the right side of history.
I will not give up.
#8mars2024
Another day from hell.
#Gaza reaches an unprecedented reported death toll of 30,000 Palestinians killed, while an additional 100 people are reportedly killed & 700 injured when they were desperately trying to get lifesaving humanitarian aid from a convoy.
Neither @UNRWA nor any other @UN agency were involved in this distribution. When will this madness end?
#InvestInhumanity@UnhcrTchad
Too many countries still seem to be addicted to coal – even if cheaper, greener options are available.
We need much more progress on:
- carbon pricing
- ensuring no new coal plants by 2020
- ending trillions of dollars in giveaways of taxpayers’ money to the fossil fuel industry

At Christmas we also reflect on flight, refuge and exile: “Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and stay there until I tell you, for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.” (Matthew, 2, 13)
Don't want to believe @RaedFares4 has been killed. One of the few peaceful pro-democracy activists from the early days of the uprising who was still in #Syria .Tireless, uncompromisingly principled, good humored, big-hearted and much more. A huge loss. #KafraNbel . RIP my friend

The situation of refugees and migrants on the “Diciotti” in Catania offends international principles and values. I appeal - strongly - to Italy and the EU to allow disembarkation and make it a collective European effort. https://t.co/Mj7vpuQtYe
