The Tamil Nadu government has applied for Geographical Indication (GI) tags for five unique traditional food and beverage products, aiming to protect and promote the state’s rich culinary identity both at home and abroad.

The applications, filed by the Tamil Nadu Food Processing and Agri Export Promotion Corporation (TNAPEx) through the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology, include:

Kumbakonam Degree Coffee (Thanjavur) - the iconic filter coffee that locals swear by

Kodaikanal Panrimalai Coffee (Dindigul) - highland coffee with a distinctive character

Karamanikuppam Karuvadu (Cuddalore) - traditional dried fish

Nilgiri Ghee - pure, aromatic ghee from the hills

Palamedu Palkova (Madurai) – the melt in the mouth milk sweet loved across the region

A GI tag certifies that a product’s unique quality, reputation, or characteristics are deeply linked to its place of origin. Once granted, it helps prevent imitation, boosts market value, and opens doors to premium domestic and international markets directly benefiting local farmers, artisans, and producers.

Officials note that GI status can significantly expand export potential and improve livelihoods in the communities that have preserved these recipes and techniques for generations.

The states currently leading in the number of GI tags are Uttar Pradesh with 81, Tamil Nadu with 76, and Maharashtra with 55.
