PRAGRAD, a new patient-driven treatment approach for very advanced oral cavity #cancers (which cannot be surgically removed) shows significant improvement in patient outcomes: prospective study by CMC #research team.
Instead of a one-size-fits-all plan, #patients are given the choice of #palliative care or aggressive chemoradiation, promoting shared decision-making and #PatientAutonomy.
It was found that when decision making was shared, more patients were willing to try aggressive chemoradiation; half the number who responded to initial #chemotherapy and continued aggressive treatment, survived over 30 months - 5 times longer than those choosing palliation (6 months). Nearly half survived beyond 2 years - a remarkable outcome for this advanced stage.

Keynote address - 'Will AI make clinicians obsolete?' - by Dr. John Cherian Oommen, CMC alumnus and Vice-Chairman of the CMC Vellore Association, speaking from a perspective of having lived and worked for over 30 years in a rural hospital in #Odisha.
In a world focused on data points and dollar points, #AI can be a tool for speed, efficiency & accuracy, he said, but only clinicians can act as agents of compassion & share in the pain of their #patients.
Dr. Oommen reiterated that as long as patients are human, AI cannot replace the clinician nor can AI give the clinician meaning and purpose in his calling.
