Because believing in Christians doing great works for God is like standard charismatic / Pentecostal fare.

So John was a forerunner for the 1st coming of Jesus and some people can say they are forerunners for the 2nd coming. Not staying that is the way to interpret 1:17 but it's not automatically occultic either.
