A powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of Maasim, Sarangani, Mindanao, disrupting communities and placing lives at risk.
Philippine Red Cross is on the ground, delivering urgent search and rescue, providing first aid, ambulance service, and psychosocial care, assisting in evacuations and hospital care, and reinforcing health services with emergency medical tents and blood supplies. Volunteer nurses are also on duty at hospitals, assisting patients and supporting medical personnel as response operations continue.
@IFRC is working closely with the @PhilRedCross, ready to scale up support to ensure communities receive timely and life-saving assistance.

Ebola is a virus that causes a severe and often fatal illness.
It is named for a river in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where one of the first outbreaks of the disease occurred in 1976. An outbreak in West Africa that began in 2014 killed more than 11,000 people.
Ebola virus comes from wild animals and then spreads person to person through direct contact with an infected person or contaminated materials.
Symptoms can include sudden fever, muscle pain, headache, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, kidney or liver problems and bleeding. People are not infectious until they develop symptoms, and the incubation period is two to 21 days.

Democratic Republic of the Congo: On May 18, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a Level 3 (Reconsider Nonessential Travel) Travel Health Notice for Ebola for the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
On May 17, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the Ebola outbreak in the DRC and Uganda a Public Health Emergency of International Concern .
On May 17, due to the outbreak, the government of Rwanda closed its land border with the DRC.
The Travel Advisory for the DRC lists Ituri Province as a Level 4 (Do Not Travel) area of increased risk. The U.S. government is extremely limited in its ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in Ituri province. Do not travel to this area for any reason.
