Does filamentation and toxin production provide a benefit to the fungal pathogen Candida albicans? We investigated these properties of Candida while examining its ability to colonize the gut....
We show that filamentation by Candida can help it compete with bacteria in the gut, and this is due to factors such as the toxin candidalysin. We propose that this toxin has a direct role in inhibiting commensal bacteria thereby helping the fungus colonize the gut.
