A huge mobility leap for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

India’s largest and longest urban road tunnel, the Thane–Borivali Twin Tunnel Project, has just crossed a historic milestone.

MMRDA has successfully completed the Thane-side portal excavation and lowered the 13.34-metre single-shield Tunnel Boring Machine cutterhead, the largest ever deployed in India for an urban infrastructure project. This milestone signals the start of the actual tunnelling phase of this pathbreaking project.

The 11.8-kilometre underground twin tunnel will seamlessly connect Thane’s Ghodbunder Road with the Western Express Highway in Borivali, cutting travel time from 60–90 minutes to just 15 minutes, and redefining how lakhs of Mumbaikars move.

Passing beneath the eco-sensitive Sanjay Gandhi National Park, the tunnels are being built using the most advanced TBM technology to ensure safe, efficient and eco-friendly construction with minimal ground disturbance.

Each tunnel will feature three lanes, including a dedicated emergency lane, with cross-passages every 300 metres. The tunnels will be equipped with advanced ventilation systems, modern firefighting equipment, smoke detectors and illuminated LED signboards.

Once completed, this landmark project will drastically reduce travel time, ease congestion, lower emissions and deliver a faster, cleaner and smarter commute for citizens.

The successful lowering of the TBM cutterhead is not just an engineering achievement. It is proof that Mumbai is ready to take on the most complex underground mobility challenges, head-on.

Through projects like the Thane–Borivali Twin Tunnel, MMRDA is reimagining and redefining mobility in the MMR.
