PAKISTAN: Reacting to the life sentences given by Quetta’s Anti-Terrorism court to Baloch activists Mahrang Baloch and Sibghat Ullah Shah Jee on 22 June, Amnesty International said:
“This verdict, which is an affront to the right to a fair trial, demonstrates how Pakistan’s anti-terrorism laws are being cynically misused to silence peaceful dissent. The conviction and sentence followed an expedited secret trial conducted on jail premises, during which serious concerns were raised over international fair trial standards and due process. No direct evidence was presented linking Mahrang and Shah Jee to the alleged violence.”

Life Sentences for Baloch Youth Leaders Constitute State Terrorism — BNM Spokesperson

The spokesperson of the Baloch National Movement (BNM) strongly condemned the life sentences handed down to BYC leader Dr. Mahrang Baloch, Sibghatullah Baloch, and Baloch Students Organization Chairman and M.Phil. scholar Balach Qadir. The spokesperson stated that Pakistan is a terrorist state that is using its state power and institutions to spread fear and terror in Balochistan.
By sentencing the young leadership of Balochistan to life imprisonment, an attempt is being made to suppress resistance politics. Dr. Mahrang Baloch, Sibghatullah Baloch, and Balach Qadir have been raising their voices against state oppression and human rights violations committed against the Baloch nation through peaceful political resistance. They have been punished in order to intimidate Baloch national activists and discourage them from continuing their political struggle.
The spokesperson said that the Baloch nation has no confidence in "faceless" courts or in Pakistan's Constitution and legal system. This sentence is not merely directed against a few individuals or the future leadership of the Baloch nation; rather, it is a decision by the state against the entire Baloch nation, which will be challenged and resisted at every level.
We reject this verdict. This act of judicial terrorism by Pakistan cannot stop the Baloch national movement or obstruct the path of resistance politics.
The sentencing of prominent Baloch leaders Mahrang Baloch and Subghatullah to two life terms by Pakistani courts without any evidence is a continuation of the state's oppression and tyranny against the Baloch people and an open manifestation of hostility toward the Baloch nation.
𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗩𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁. 𝗦𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.
The imprisonment of human rights defenders and lawyers for peaceful advocacy is an attack on justice itself.
We demand the immediate release of detained BYC leaders including Dr Mahrang Baloch, Beebagr Zehri, Sibqatullah Shahji, Beebow Baloch, Gullzadi Baloch and lawyers Imaan Mazari, and Hadi Ali Chattha.

Strongly condemn the Pakistani state's latest unfair court decisions on Baloch human rights defender Dr. Mahrang Baloch and her companion. Targeting peaceful activists with harassment & repression is blatant human rights abuse. End the oppression in Balochistan. #FreeBYCLeader
