@janecoaston Seems like a recasting of Roe, not exactly a compromise. Dobbs ruling attacked the implicit right to privacy and questioned liberty, which should startle every American. Codifying a right to privacy, with a Constitutional amendment if need be, would be a broadly popular response.
@MoBrooks “It agitates the community with ill-founded jealousies and false alarms, kindles the animosity of one part against another, foments occasionally riot and insurrection. It opens the door to foreign influence and corruption…”
I don’t wish to sound apocalyptic about this, but one has the sense that at present our society is simultaneously characterized by wildly disproportionate accountability for trivial transgressions and zero accountability for profound institutional failure.
@egrecque@kairyssdal That reasoning doesn’t hold for the unrealized gains on my house. They assess it at a higher value year after year, and somehow I come up with cash to pay the tax. Billionaires have the money to pay tax on unrealized gains, too.
@egrecque@kairyssdal What could a tax on stock value be used to fund? It could provide healthcare for all. It could provide tuition-free state college education in fields our job markets will demand. It could offset more regressive forms of taxation.
@egrecque@kairyssdal Alabama receives $2.02 in federal spending for every $1 paid in federal tax, so those paying income taxes in NY, NJ, MA, etc are funding infrastructure projects in AL. The mechanism of tax is often divorced from the purpose or use of the tax revenue.
@egrecque@kairyssdal Yes, exactly. Not necessarily advocating for it, just asking why taxing property with unrealized gains is normal and acceptable for some kinds of property (eg homes/land) but not for others (stocks etc).
@egrecque@kairyssdal I think use tax is just a variation on sales tax to cover the situations in which a purchase is made out-of-state/jurisdiction that is not charged sales tax. The purchaser is expected to declare the “use” of that purchase and pay the native state/jurisdiction tax.
@egrecque@kairyssdal Did that address the question of concept? Not sure whether you meant mechanism or purpose/justification. Regardless, I welcome the question and further discussion!
@elonmusk The far left and the far right are not equally distributed, so aiming to upset them equally would assuredly not be politically neutral. Maybe you should have just bought Parler instead?
@ChadAChavez @DevynsKeith @FrancesForHSV@aremkus1@Matt_Kroschel@MeganPlotka @NicoleWAAY31 It seems that, like you, they couldn’t sign up to a list that had been removed early. It’s our loss; I appreciate hearing your perspective on objective data and transparency.
@krfaulk Protect voting rights (redistricting, registration, mail-in voting) and Improve healthcare (medicaid expansion, restore funding for mental health services, treat addictions medically not criminally)
@TabithaK But that’s the point: if local munis use the funds to build shared infrastructure, no state permission or constitutional amendment is needed. Huntsville did this, leasing capacity to Google Fiber.
