Any PhD students or researchers looking for advice about conducting research in challenging times? Eliza is looking for questions to answer for you (e.g. about ethics, mental health, productivity, misinformation), so let her know what you want to know:
Super interesting, wide ranging discussion, inspirational robot experiences, proposal with Wall-E, new form of HRI between robot and expert roboticist, purpose of life to be there for other humans because clearly nothing else matters when we are a speck of dust in the multiverse.
I had a TON of fun talking to Lex about the game-theoretic perspective on coordinating with people and value alignment, capitalizing on leaked information from humans, modeling humans as rational under different beliefs, and also personal stories! https://t.co/JcJGLkdNZz
What am I looking at? Apparently xenobots, living machines designed on a computer using an evolutionary algorithm, then made from heart and skin cells developed from stem cells of frog embryos (species: Xenopus laevis).
Amazing #NeurIPS2019 talk about "How to know" Take home message: what everyone in ML should know about humans and bonus insightful comments on the climate for men
I was informed I went through my #NeurIPS2019 talk summary slide too fast, & people who wanted to take pictures to Tweet couldn't... You are right. Here you go.
TLDR: Using evolutionary computation with deep learning could be the next big thing in AI (and if you implement it and are lucky, it could make you rich and famous, but probably not)
A robot that can kind-of follow commands forward, backward & a few words for stop using word vectors from word2vec as inputs. I wonder if other sensible generalizations could be made from word vector similarities. Not currently v. convincing but an interesting research direction.
Undergraduate David Matthews from @uvmvermont today unveils
one of only two robots ever to obey words it's never heard before.
At #IROS2019, 1pm, in room LG-R20 (paper WeBT20.1).

Great story @TechCrunch on @RobustAI, with a little bit more about how we came to be and what @rodneyabrooks @hiskov @mohamedramer Anthony Jules and I are aiming to build.
And, yes, we’re hiring! https://t.co/5VpGFwQgzs
Maybe social robotics isn't quite done yet? - "... when designers will start their own social robotics companies and hire engineers, rather than the other way around, we will finally discover what the hidden need for home robots was in the first place."
Interesting study on spatial ability: gender inequality of a country is predictive of gender differences in navigational ability, spatial ability is correlated with economic wealth, spatial ability is correlated with orienteering championships results.
!!! Gender inequality of a country is predictive of gender differences in navigation ability- no gender difference in Norway 💃🏻: Global Determinants of Navigation Ability https://t.co/ZraugrDRMg
