#Toronto rant: I'm not one to get too sensational about the ongoing decline of public transit in Toronto, but anecdotally, here is a recap of my three subway rides just this week.
1. A woman on the subway at 11 p.m. after a concert is screaming racist comments and hurling threats at young passengers to the point that people are moving cars.
2. A man with his pants down is fondling himself outside Union Station in the early afternoon, trying to get close to women to get himself off.
3. A man is screaming homophobic slurs and hurling threats at two young men minding their own business.
My family and I take public transit in Toronto every week, and have done so for almost two decades. It is getting worse and worse. My friend was randomly punched in the face, many women I know will not ride the TTC alone, and my teen son has too many horror stories to retell.
I do not feel safe most of the time. Rarely do I see any transit police, even late at night, when subway cars are packed after special events in the city. If I did, I would be the first to ask for help.
Yet we've been having this distracting conversation about removing bike lanes (as if that will help the absolute 24-7 traffic disaster in our city). Also, side note, I would bike everywhere if I didn't think there was a good chance of getting hit by a car.
So, here's an idea. Make public transit cleaner, safer, and more reliable for everyone, including families, commuters, teens, seniors, etc.
I am not going to stop taking the TTC because I believe in the importance of public transportation to make our city better. However, we need to stop kidding ourselves about why public transportation is not a choice for so many of our residents.
Also, I understand that many people ride the TTC and have had no issues whatsoever, but that is absolutely not my experience. I understand that there are a growing number of people in our city who are battling addiction and struggling on the streets, so let's do everything we can to get them help.
As a voter in the upcoming municipal election, this is my number one issue. I will vote for the candidate who is honest about this situation, which I believe is at the root of so many of our issues and a growing embarrassment for a city that wants to compete on the world stage.
Corporal Jeff Smith, who was critically injured during the Sons of Jacob Synagogue shootout in Belleville, remains in hospital.
A fundraiser for Cpl Smith, organized by Derek Kreindler on behalf of the Canadian Jewish Community, has thus far raised $337,423.
Here is an update from Corporal Jeff Smith's wife, Ashley Smith, on his condition:
"Hello, world.
I don’t know where to begin.
My words aren’t strong or steady yet, but I knew I needed to find them. I needed to use my voice for my dear Jeff, until he is able to use his.
From the deepest part of my heart and soul, thank you.
Thank you to this good and kind world that has surrounded Jeff and our family with more love, compassion, generosity and selflessness than I could ever put into words.
I cannot begin to express what the outpouring of love and support has meant to us. I know there are things happening every day that I don’t even know about yet. Messages being sent. Prayers being said. People checking in. Hands reaching out.
And I know that my gratitude will never be enough.
I am witnessing real-life miracles.
And so many of them have happened through human hands.
The life-saving hands of paramedics and police. The hands of an angel neurosurgeon. The steady, capable hands of trauma teams, doctors, nurses, RTs, PSWs and so many others whose names we may never know, but whose kindness and skill we will carry with us forever.
The helping hands of neighbours, friends, community members and volunteers.
And then there are the hands that held me and my sweet girls when we were living through the scariest and darkest day of our lives.
Today, I held Jeff’s hand.
And I thought about all of those hands.
All of the people who have carried him, cared for him, prayed for him, fought for him and held us up when we didn’t know how we were going to stand.
I will never forget any of it.
I also want to send my love and prayers to the Jewish community, and to every scared soul who was there on Sunday night. Please know that your love, your prayers and your support have reached us. We are deeply grateful. We love you, we see you, we pray for you.
So I am asking for one thing.
Keep it coming.
Prayer. Hope. Faith. Love. Whatever you have to give, please keep giving it. We will take every bit of it we can get.
Jeff has a very long, difficult road ahead.
But he is not walking it alone.
He has an army of love behind him.
And I know Jeff.
He is the best man I know.
He loves his family with his whole heart. He cares deeply. He gives freely. He shows up. He is a man of integrity. He is my safest place.
And right now, he is fighting.
So we will fight with him.
Thank you for loving him.
Thank you for believing in him.
Thank you for honouring him.
Thank you for holding our family up.
Our hero.
Your hero.
💙🖤
With heartfelt gratitude,
Ashley"

Remember what happened last time Trump delisted wolves?
It unleashed what the former director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service—who'd previously been in favor of delisting wolves—described as the “epidemic of cruelty” and "ecocide."
As a result, he forcefully called for:
1. Immediately restore federal ESA protection for wolves, using the emergency-listing provision.
2. Appoint a qualified permanent FWS director capable of providing science-based leadership.
Their ESA protection was restored under Biden after a federal court overturned Trump's delisting—but Trump casually trashes it again:
Trump has ordered the Interior Department to remove ESA protections for gray wolves and Mexican wolves, while also directing agencies to make it easier to kill wolves.

Caledon, Ontario:
These two stole all the bags of firewood available for sale roadside for the second time in less than a month.
They have enough money for a +$100k Denali pickup but would rather steal than pay people for their hard work.
Make them famous, these people are turning Canada into a low trust society.
@FoxNews This is the end game of socialized medicine. Once you become a burden on the system it’s lights out. Break a hip, need a knee replacement… have something curable like pneumonia? Nah…. it’s easier just to kill you. Canada has gone absolutely nuts with the liberal policies.
☠️ 83-year-old Christian grandmother in Belleville.
Family says she refused MAID.
Care home booked the assessment while her power of attorney was away.
She couldn’t answer basic questions about her own family.
Two days before, she cried and said she’d made a mistake.
They killed her anyway. Hands clasped in prayer. Police now investigating. 💉
If the “safeguards” work, show the consent. 🇨🇦

🚨Absolutely horrifying scenes in Belleville, Ontario.🚨
In broad daylight, in a residential neighbourhood, roughly 30 bullets were fired at a synagogue, targeting the Jewish community on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in Judaism.
This is not normal. This is antisemitic terror on Canadian soil.
The ultimate betrayal 💔🐘 After 33 years alone and chained at a temple, Madhuri finally found safety, care, and companionship with @PetaIndia's help at a rehab center. Now she’s been SENT BACK to where she suffered for decades. Take action: https://t.co/J6dRhDX8Dx
The discovery of 29 dead sperm whales with plastic filled stomachs has exposed a devastating warning about what is happening beneath our oceans. The heartbreaking loss shows how dangerous plastic pollution has become for marine life.
George Chuvalo has died.
Born on this day in 1937, he was a five-time Canadian heavyweight champion and twice fought Muhammad Ali. In 93 fights, he was never knocked down. Ali called him the toughest man he ever fought. He had 73 wins, 64 by knockout.
RIP Champ.
