The take home: Melting @ < 60km ➡️ No rutile ➡️ no Nb anomaly ➡️ no continental crust signature.
Rutile + garnet only stable at ≥60 km.

We used experiments to explore redox equilibria between Fe and S species in basaltic melts, as well as a first look at reaction kinetics.

@kathycalm You're misunderstanding. The paper does not say plate tectonics doesn't exist. It highlights how silicic crust can be produced in areas away from subduction zones, such as Iceland.

Garnet is needed to explain the composition of the oldest continental crust. Our experiments show garnets are not stable in metabasalt residues until depths deeper than the archaean crust...

Group field trip to Iceland off to an interesting start. Airport carnage! Edinburgh —> Iceland ✈️ was cancelled last night! Sorted a new flight w/overnight detour via Luton. Pictured: Settling down for 4 hours sleep in Luton airport. New flight 2hrs delayed, all fingers crossed!
⭐️new pre-print on @EarthArXiv ⭐️ finally finished part of the original #PhD project with @UoBEarthScience @GW4plusDTP @gnsscience using basalt geochemistry from Okataina to understand the plumbing system at this active caldera system with @sallylaw@NZvolcanologist et al.
I passed my viva with minor corrections! Thanks to @GeoSalCam and Cees-Jan for all the helpful discussion. Celebrated the only way possible in lockdown - prosecco, bonfire, hot water bottles and marshmallows!
