PM2.5 is perhaps the most unforgiving pollutant.

These microscopic particles penetrate deep into our lungs, and some can even cross into the bloodstream, triggering inflammation and increasing the risk of heart, lung and other diseases. Doctors have long warned that this is a public health emergency.

Today, 1 August, was meant to mark the enforcement of stricter emission norms. Yet, reports indicate that 91% of NCR industries failed to comply-and have been given more time.

Every extension for polluters-including delays in FGD (Flue Gas Desulfurization) compliance and concerns around mixed waste incineration through WtE (Waste-to-Energy)-is another extension of exposure for our children. Long-term exposure to air pollution has consistently been linked to impaired lung development, reduced lung function and wider health impacts, including respiratory, cardiovascular, neurodevelopmental and metabolic risks.

Sharing this interview of a 9-year-old Gurugram student from the 2017 Clean Air Petition campaign, when children collected over 25,000 signatures and appealed to authorities to address the local causes of air pollution.

Those children are now in college. They are Gen Z.

Nearly a decade later, the questions remain unanswered.

For many citizens, the lived reality has not improved-it has worsened. Malba hills, dusty roads, lack of pedestrian paths and cycle tracks, open retail of construction sand, exposed roadside soil, unmanaged construction activity, rampant waste burning and inadequate dust control continue to expose people to avoidable pollution every single day and lack of sustainable waste mngt and waste minimization polices.

A generation has grown up breathing polluted air because preventable sources of pollution have not been addressed with the urgency they demand.

If industries genuinely need help to comply, provide targeted financial and technical support to meet emission standards. But repeated extensions cannot become a substitute for enforcement.

Why does protecting public health continue to be the slower response?

PM2.5 does not forgive. Will future generations forgive us for failing to protect the air they breathe?

P.S. @CAQM_Official and @CPCB_OFFICIAL should publish transparent data on NCR complaints-construction dust, illegal mining, waste and debris management, dust control failures at mining and construction sites, transportation dust, industrial emissions, open burning, road dust, firecracker violations and other sources-along with repeated complaints despite Action Taken Reports (ATRs).

Clean air needs enforcement, accountability, urgency and leadership.

We seek this from our respected Prime Minister @narendramodi ji: please take decisive action on this long-standing public health crisis. A generation’s health cannot remain dependent on delayed implementation of policies that already exist.

We also need difficult but necessary decisions-including a temporary ban on firecrackers for a few years-to reduce the toxic burden of air pollution and give our children cleaner air to breathe.

A significant part of this crisis is linked to governance gaps and failure to effectively implement existing policies of @moefcc and @MoHUA_India.
