#Keeladi at #Panruti?

The region around Panruti, enriched by the Thenpennai, Malattar, and Kedilam rivers, appears to have once supported a vast urban civilization.

The evidence observed during our field visit suggests a densely populated settlement where people lived in houses constructed with strong, well-fired bricks. Features such as drainage systems and ring wells-similar to those found at Keeladi, are also present in this region.

We spent the entire day surveying the area near #thiruthuraiyur #poondi #varinjipakkam and documented a wide variety of pottery fragments. These included thin black-and-red ware sherds, thick pale-yellow pottery tempered with organic material and fired at high temperatures, finely crafted decorated pottery, and fragments of terracotta figurines.

In a few locations, we even came across pieces of human skeletal remains, indicating the possible presence of ancient burial urns (Muthumakkal Thazhis). At one site, a complete ring well was clearly visible.

These remains have been exposed after earth was excavated for a brick kiln. Local residents told us that such discoveries are quite common in the area. They recalled seeing hundreds of ring wells along the riverbanks over the years, many of which were unfortunately destroyed during bridge construction and other development works because their archaeological significance was not understood at the time.

Based on these observations, I believe this region once hosted a major urban civilization. If systematic archaeological excavations are undertaken, they could mark a significant turning point in our understanding of South Indian history.

Although the Kedilam River flows for only about 110 kilometres, historical records and studies have long associated its banks with a flourishing civilization and the Kadava Kingdom. Senthamangalam, the capital of the Kadava rulers, has already been documented as an important archaeological and historical site.

It is my earnest appeal that both the Archaeological Survey of India and the Tamil Nadu State Department of Archaeology undertake comprehensive excavations in this region and bring the remarkable story of the “Kedilam Civilization” to the world.

Note: The archaeological interpretation presented here is based on field observations and local accounts.
