ASEAN Chair Urges Myanmar Junta to Free Aung San Suu Kyi
The Philippines, as ASEAN chair, on Friday called on Myanmar’s military junta to release the remaining political prisoners, including Aung San Suu Kyi, as it welcomed a recent mass amnesty as a step toward reconciliation but said more must be done.
In a statement, the bloc said it welcomed Myanmar’s plan to free at least 4,000 prisoners, including former president Win Myint, describing it as “a positive step towards inclusive national dialogue among all parties.” “In this regard, we encourage the release of the remaining prisoners in Myanmar, including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, in the spirit of genuine reconciliation and peace,” the ASEAN chair said.
The bloc reaffirmed its commitment to helping Myanmar achieve a “peaceful and durable solution” to the crisis—one that is “Myanmar-owned, Myanmar-led”—and said the Five-Point Consensus remains the primary framework guiding efforts to resolve the situation. It also stressed that Myanmar remains an integral part of ASEAN.
The statement reiterated calls for an immediate halt to violence, urging all parties to exercise restraint, protect civilians, and create conditions conducive to the delivery of humanitarian assistance. The call comes after Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow visited Myanmar earlier this week and held talks with junta leader Min Aung Hlaing. Sihasak said Min Aung Hlaing told him Suu Kyi was being “well looked after” and that “good things” were being considered for her, without elaborating. He also conveyed ASEAN’s concerns over her welfare.
Suu Kyi, 80, has been detained since the Myanmar coup 2021, which ousted her elected government and plunged the country into crisis. She is serving a combined 27-year prison sentence on charges ranging from incitement and corruption to election-related offenses and violations of state secrecy laws—cases widely viewed by her supporters as politically motivated.
Myanmar recently announced an amnesty for 4,335 prisoners to mark the country’s New Year, including a reduction in Suu Kyi’s sentence. The ASEAN chair also welcomed the release of Southeast Asian nationals and called for the safe and prompt repatriation of those freed, as well as others still in detention, particularly victims of human trafficking and transnational crimes.

This could help encourage information leaks from scam compounds, and may indirectly give some victims a path to escape. If the U.S. also ensures protection and safe exit for victim-informants, more may come forward.

Military junta with civilian clothes but, with same military personnels has continued its brutal violence against civilians including #airstrikes, arson and massive killings.
We urge #MPs in #Istanbul at #IPU152 to raise your voice to end junta's violence against people of #Myanmar.
The White House warns foreign regimes enabling cyber scams threaten Americans. Territories under the #MyanmarJunta host major scam hubs targeting the victim worldwide. This is a global threat. #MyanmarJunta must be held accountable immediately.

@LawrenceWongST@ASEAN@MYasean2025 Dear PM Wong, as an #ASEAN fellow, I wish to highlight that #MyanmarJunta brings only disgrace, harm, and instability to the region and its people. Please reconsider sending observers to its sham election, as doing so could be seen as support.

At the 151st #IPU Assembly in Geneva, I spoke on behalf of the people of #Myanmar—denouncing the junta’s airstrikes, attacks on civilians, and weaponization of aid.
I urged all nations to reject its sham elections.
Let us not allow dictatorship to be disguised as democracy.
The junta continues to target civilians, obstruct humanitarian access, and weaponizing aid—violating the fundamental principles of humanity, neutrality, impartiality, and independence. Under this situation, the planned December elections further deepen the crisis.
