@NalinisKitchen Hindi is a beautiful language and gives us some great movies and songs but people should learn any additional languages only on an as-needed basis such as going to a different state for work
@NalinisKitchen Hindi is taught in schools in Kerala as well. But as a third language, with limited exposure to Hindi, and with a huge difference between Hindi and Malayalam, people are not at all comfortable in speaking Hindi.
@NalinisKitchen If an educated person comes to Kerala for work, I’d expect that person to talk n in Malayalam or at least English - the two languages most commonly understood in Kerala. Expecting everyone else to speak in Hindi is imposition.
@NalinisKitchen If a tourist or if an uneducated worker comes to Kerala, most people are happy to work with that person even with sign language. There are situations such as when negotiating prices for autos or taxis. It has nothing to do with language; instead it is about dominating.
@asharoraa Historically, it has taken less than 15 years (much less than the time it takes to conceive a child and the child becoming 21.) I don’t think any (most) who are on H1B after MS/MBA will think of conceiving a child to get GC. Most will consider EB1, EB5 or moving to Canada.
@johncutlefish I think many don’t understand the impact it has on the outcome and hence don’t check for quality when releasing the same way they do for the functionality and performance.
@shreyas I agree. I believe the things you can fake is a very narrow set. You can fake self-confidence and fearlessness, for example, but you should not fake it and say we will get it done when it’s highly probable that it’ll fail.
@shasvathi Have you considered asking for the money upfront for short work and milestone-based payments for longer work? If you’re not new in the biz, you should be able to demand this.
@samuel_spitz Meal prep saves time. Call friends or family everyday but unless it’s a special occasion, meet them during weekends. Alternate cardio and lifting weights. 10k steps is hard when you WFH and doing live in a walkable city. Having young kids is what really makes this impossible.
@proetrie Anyone who is 34 and earning 850k as an employee is driven by higher salaries and scope so it is natural to feel intimidated by someone who is performing better at the same age. Try looking for people who have very different goals from yours so that they don’t feel as intimidated
@bandanjot Executives may not personally log into JIRA but are often reliant on reports and dashboards presented to them. So it’s still a win for JIRA because you are a few users short in terms of license fees but you still have executive sponsor getting value.
@JustAnotherPM When I used to go to office, these times fill up with me chatting with people. They drop by or we catch each other at the coffee machine. With WFH, I have a very flexible schedule so it could be anything - personal chore, read the latest from Stratechery.
@Raamadaasan1 You don’t need to learn Hindi from childhood for mingling with your colleagues and rickshaw-wallahs. You can learn it as an adult if and when you need it. Why force Hindi onto young kids when we don’t really know where they will go and what language they will need.
