For anyone who needs to hear this:
The point of your sports IS NOT to be good at youth sports.
The point is to teach values that will make them successful as they get older in sports AND life.
If you appropriately teach these values you will have many successful athletes that enter their adult years!!!!
If instead your kids peak between 8-14 years old it is not the kids fault, it is your systems fault and your values are misplaced.
In Germany, a talented 14-year-old earns his club money. In America, his parents pay the club $15,000 a year.
That single inversion explains why "we will not" is the most accurate line ever written about US soccer.
FIFA built a global system for this. Training compensation and solidarity payments send a cut of every transfer fee back to the clubs that developed the player, from age 12 onward. Develop one future pro and your academy gets paid for a decade. Barcelona's La Masia, Ajax, every Bundesliga academy runs on this logic. The kid is the asset.
US Soccer refuses to enforce those rules. When Seattle's Crossfire Premier claimed its $60,000 share of DeAndre Yedlin's transfer to Tottenham, it got nothing. Claims on the Dempsey and Bradley transfers died partly because the federation couldn't even produce the youth training records.
So American clubs earn zero dollars when a kid turns pro. They earn when a kid enrolls. Which makes the parent the customer, and the product is whatever keeps the parent writing checks: travel tournaments, hotel weekends, $500 showcase events, private training at $100 an hour. Elite pathways run $8,000 to $20,000 a year. A comparable academy spot in Italy costs about 120 euros.
Follow the incentive one level deeper and it gets darker. A club dependent on fees can't cut its weakest paying players, so rosters optimize for retention over development. The scouting pool shrinks to families who can afford the cliff, which appears around age 11, exactly when development matters most. The country runs a talent filter sorted by household income instead of ability.
Every four years someone proposes fixing this. The proposal always requires the people profiting from the $15,000 model to vote themselves out of business.
They will not.
The Little League World Series started in 1947.
Since then, thousands of the best youth baseball players from across the world have played in it.
Only 64 have made major league baseball.
Youth stars seldom make adult stars
Stop worrying about your 12 years olds 'success'
Like many others, been saying it for years.
Anyone who discourages your child from playing multiple sports does not have your child’s best interests in mind.
Period.
Cursing is rarely a symbol of low class. It's often a mark of high authenticity.
Evidence: Swearing predicts higher rates of honesty and integrity. It signals a willingness to prize candor over courtesy.
A little profanity shows that you're being real and you do give a damn.
The single most important job of any youth sport coach is to make sure the kids have so much fun that they come back to play the next season. It's embarrassing how much that gets overlooked in 2025.
@MeatEaterTV@stevenrinella@olCal406@muskychet The WI DNR and DHS have issued new PFAS advisories for a lake chain I fish once a year and consume a meal of panfish from. A blanket "Do Not Eat" recommendation of any size or species.
How would you handle this?
Might be one of the best things I ever read on youth athletic development...this is coming from an Olympic lifting coach Don McCauley.
"I'm not going to spend a lot of time in this book writing about the developmental holes I believe most U.S. athletes have because of improper preparation for high level sports performance most have received. Let me state this. If you are a pre-teen or teenage athlete who competes in four or five sports per year or unending competitive seasons, you are in an abusive situation, not athletics. If you haven't taken or been given time to run through the woods or streets or alleys with your friends, jump up on rocks, jump rope, wrestle anyone that came by, skate backwards, play hop Scotch, bale hay or chop wood, climb trees, jump off a swing for height and distance, play dodge ball, climb over a fence, play Sandlot football and do back flips and cartwheels for fun, you haven't been properly prepared for high competition levels in true power sports." If you’re a sports coach, strength coach etc.
And you ever go into a lift, session, practice etc with the mindset of:
“We are going to make these kids puke today.”
Simply put, you are a stupid asshole.
In youth sports (as in life), parents must be comfortable saying “no.” If you aren't comfortable saying no, find a coach who'll say no for you. If you have a coach who doesn't like you saying no, find a new team. You can't say yes to every team, tournament, showcase, or lesson.
You put me on a track man screen at a golf course and I will have some of the craziest metrics you’ll ever see. Tour level stuff. But, I am not a great golfer. The key is getting the ball in the hole… scrambling and finding a way. This is exactly compares to so many I see now in baseball. At show cases or metrically they measure off the charts. Sometimes that correlates. But the question is… can you play the game? Can you actually hit or pitch or are you just chasing numbers. The numbers are fine and useful. But you still have to play the game. You still have to be a gamer. There is a difference, believe me.
@BryanBroaddus@TheDraftShow Does the draft pick trade chart ever change? Are picks worth what they're worth, regardless of how deep, top heavy, or weak the current draft class is?
