I didn't realise quite how much peat is used in UK mushroom production. Thanks goodness funding is in place to explore alternative production methods. Continuing to use peat like this is not an option. @innovateuk

In October I found an unusual red fungus growing on dead branches of an eared willow in Glen Affric. I suspected it was the Scarlet splash fungus (Cytidia salicina), a scarce species with only a handful of records in Scotland, & this has now been confirmed - an important record.
Great news - the beautiful & unusual lichen Multiclavula corynoides has been discovered for the 1st time in Britain! Sometimes known as Club-wielding Crust Lichen, it was found by our lichen expert @davidgenney when mountain biking around Ben Wyvis. https://t.co/KmXc624tWM
The largest recorded living thing is a #fungus called honey fungus. It measured 2.4 miles across and was discovered in the Blue Mountains in Oregon. You can read more here - https://t.co/3MOUTdasYl #UKFungusDay@ukfungusday
Atlantic hazelwoods along Scotland’s west coast support the glue fungus, which captures twigs and branches in the canopy. The equally strange Hazel Gloves lives on the glue fungus. Here's a video about our work with this #fungus - https://t.co/UEePpvuk5B #UKFungusDay@ukfungusday
On Sunday in Edinburgh, Historic Scotland celebrate #UKFungusDay in Holyrood Park. Info - https://t.co/Ln8pjHGy6C #Fungi are the World’s recyclers, without them wood wouldn't decay and nutrients wouldn't be released for future plant growth. @ukfungusday#connectingpeopleandnature
Fascinated by fungi? There're several regional fungus recording groups in Scotland always happy to welcome new members. You could contact your nearest group and see what they're getting up to near you - https://t.co/2KcXxMq2dh @ukfungusday#UKFungusDay#connectingpeopleandnature
We have named 144,000 different types of #fungi in the World and are discovering about 2,000 new ones each year! We think more than 93% of species still remain to be discovered. #UKFungusDay@ukfungusday@scotfun#nature
A lichen was sent into open space, exposed to vacuum, wide fluctuations of temperature, the complete spectrum of solar UV light + bombarded with cosmic radiation. It then returned to Earth and continued growing unaffected by the experience - https://t.co/H57YHsCZnu #UKFungusDay
Lichens are #fungi too and #Scotland ’s 'rainforests' are a mecca for people who study #lichens from around the World because of the immense richness of these species they support. Lots more about lichens here - https://t.co/f4h4aMSeEI #UKFungusDay@ukfungusday#nature
#Fungi help plants ‘talk’ to each other. The network of interconnected trees in a forest is sometimes called the ‘Wood Wide Web’. This video tells you more - https://t.co/J1kO4nCVbx #UKFungusDay@ukfungusday@scotfun#nature
For lucky folk in Orkney the Field Club have organised a #UKFungusDay Fungi Foray tomorrow at Mull Head Nature Reserve. A great way to meet folk and learn about varieties that are safe to eat. Info - https://t.co/GGyvNvGbXv @ukfungusday#connectingpeopleandnature
