@EddieComeaux Students’ safety should be schools’ first priority. Therefore, schools should still have police on campus to protect them from harm from outside school & force should not be used on students. Police should be given proper & intensive training to work w/ adolescents #racialjustice
@JANELYmena@MisssNallely @rabea_qamar I totally agree. And in addition to their education sacrifices, they give up other opportunities such as getting a job or internships that may help further their career. #ucr150 @rabea_qamar @MisssNallely
There hasn’t been a court decision on Livers v. NCAA yet. What do you think the just decision should be? I think athletes can be considered employees due to their time commitment and profit they make for schools. #ucr150@MisssNallely @rabea_qamar
I know many students who change their majors after finding something they are passionate about. Student-athletes should be able to transfer because they want to change their major if their school does not offer that major. #Ucr150@MisssNallely @rabea_qamar
@Sulvi15505198@MisssNallely @rabea_qamar I totally agree. I think there needs to be better enforcement on the OCR’s part as well as the institutions desire to better serve female athletes #Ucr150
Prof Comeaux states that 80% of schools are not compliant with Title IC. I’m curious as to if UCR athletic programs are compliant with Title IX and if it passes the 3-prong test. #Ucr150@MisssNallely @rabea_qamar
@mayraitzelsalas@MisssNallely @rabea_qamar Yeah, I agree that it’s unfair. They don’t work to serve student-athletes but rather view them as a commodity and work to benefit as much as they can from them. #Ucr150
It is unfair that students sign NLI agreements that benefit institutions more than students/athletes w/o them fully understanding the terms&conditions. They should have a players’ association or some kind of representation during this process. #ucr150 @rabea_qamar @MisssNallely
The book says that the NCAA “swallowed up any potential rivals” and that the NAIA may be the next victim. If the NCAA “swallows up” NAIA as well as the USCAA, will it be possible to challenge the monopsonistic behavior of the NCAA? #Ucr150 @rabea_qamar @MisssNallely
@awint007 @rabea_qamar @MisssNallely@helloJuJudy Although I agree with you that college athletes should be compensated for what they do, are scholarships and help with food enough? For example, what about when an athlete is injured? #ucr150
It’s important for college athletes to have a voice regarding their rights, wellbeing, & compensation. It’s unfair for them to be exploited by institutions for their hard work in the sport and academics, as well as their physical & mental health. #Ucr150 @rabea_qamar @MissNallely
@EddieComeaux People think that their voice doesn’t matter and won’t change anything. But if you stand up for what you think is right, it’s a small start but it might change everything like it did for McKennie. Like he says, “it’s never a wrong time to do the right thing.” #collegeathletics
@CasasAllie@saragrummert I think more regulations and consequences for breaking these regulations should be enforced. Even though research shows that monetary distribution is unequal, what’s being done about it? @ucr50
@AtomMong1@saragrummert Coming from an Asian family, I felt like it was expected of me to go to college so that I can obtain a better job. Maybe some athletes go into college expecting to go into pro but never make it there nor get a well-rounded experience or education. #ucr50
A lot of students stay silent when experiencing some type of social injustice in an institution. How can we encourage more students to partake in social activism? @saragrummert#ucr50
@khuer002@saragrummert Although student athletes shouldn’t let those stigmas define them and fulfill the roles professors think of them, however, I do think that it will still negatively influence them in some type of way. They might have lower self-esteem which impact their academic performance #ucr50
In class, we mainly criticize the NCAA. One positive that we discussed in class was that it creates more opportunities for students of all social-economic statuses. What other positives are there of the NCAA? #ucr50@saragrummert
@SandraH150@saragrummert I agree with you. They should be held to the same academic standards as regular students so that they would focus on their academics during their college career as well. #ucr50
The NCCA and the federal govnt have different methods of calculating graduation rates. The GSR benefits the NCAA by inflating the rates with transfer students compared to FGR. Why is the NCAA not required to use the federal graduation rate? @saragrummert#ucr50
@ales_bu@saragrummert Although I don’t think it’s right that coaches get paid more than professors, coaches do bring in more revenue for the university in Division I athletics so it seems somewhat proportional in a way..? #ucr50
