Aircraft Impact Testing

Aircraft structures must withstand more than aerodynamic loads. Canopies, windshields, engine inlets, and wing leading edges are tested against high-speed impacts before an aircraft enters service.

The video shows several examples, including bird-strike tests on different aircraft as well as other impact tests used to evaluate critical structures. Depending on the certification requirement, different projectiles are used to simulate different impact hazards.

These tests help engineers verify structural integrity, cockpit protection, and engine resistance, ensuring the aircraft can withstand high-energy impacts without catastrophic failure.

Impact testing remains an essential part of aircraft certification, improving safety against wildlife strikes and other foreign-object hazards.

Sunset across Theophilus & Friends

On the Moon’s southeastern near side, just west of the dark lava plains of Mare Nectaris, sits a striking trio of giant impact craters: Theophilus, Cyrillus, and Catharina. Each roughly 100 kilometers across, they form one of the most impressive and easily recognized features for lunar observers.

Theophilus (at bottom), the youngest, is a classic fresh crater with sharp terraced walls, a smooth floor, and a magnificent multi-peaked central mountain rising nearly 2 km high. It clearly overlaps the older Cyrillus (centre), whose appearance is much more worn and its central peaks are partially buried.

Catharina (near top) similar to Cyrillus is heavily eroded and irregular, having been heavily battered by later impacts and its central peaks are long gone.
