AI may improve our society in some - many - ways, but it's also dragging us into a world where we engage with art, science, etc. primarily through an interface of pulling a lever on a slot machine, and waiting vacantly for it to return a result we hope to like.

I'm willing to believe AI tools are yielding usable solutions to problems in mathemathics, in the same way that AI tools deliver some labor-saving tactics to my work in graphic design, rotoscoping, etc. What I've yet to see is proof that they improve, not degrade, human thinking.

When people like Terence Tao speak of LLMs as research tools, my reaction is: "good for you, but you had years of non-LLM research to get you to a place where you can use these tools well". There is increasingly no structural incentive left to develop that kind of talent.
