New research findings by the IGAD Centre of Excellence in Nutrition (ICEN) in collaboration with Kenya Medical Training College (@Kmtc_official) shows that improving tolerance to iron & folic acid supplementation (#IFAS), is key to better maternal & fetal health.

The findings have important policy and programme implications for strengthening ANC counselling, improving adherence, and enhancing maternal nutrition outcomes.

IGAD Executive Secretary, H.E. @DrWorkneh will convene an Extraordinary Health Ministerial Meeting on the current #Ebola outbreak in the region and regional preparedness on pandemics.

The high-level virtual meeting will bring together Health Ministers from IGAD Member States and partners to deliberate on regional coordination, enhance preparedness, and reinforce collective action against cross-border public health threats under the Preparedness for Pandemic Response Project.

Together, the IGAD Member States stand committed to safeguarding lives and advancing a coordinated approach to health security in the Horn of Africa.

At the Regional Partners Learning & Information Sharing Forum, held yesterday in Nairobi, Kenya, Dr. @FatumaIAdan on behalf of IGAD Executive Secretary @DrWorkneh, called for urgent, coordinated action to tackle child wasting affecting 4.8M children across the region.

She emphasized the need for stronger cross-border coordination, integrated multisectoral approaches, and aligned partner support to tackle root causes—climate shocks, conflict, food insecurity, and limited access to services.

The event brought together HE Caitríona Ingoldsby @IrlAmbKenya, Dr Ali Mohamud - Mandera County Deputy Governor, The Ministries of Health, Agriculture & Natural Resources, Government of Kenya, Concern Worldwide, UN agencies (@FAOKenya, @UNICEFKenya, @WHOKenya, @UNHCR_Kenya), @EUinKenya, and other development partners.

📑Research Paper: The Importance and Value of Preventing Acute Malnutrition (Wasting) Among Children

The IGAD Centre of Excellence in Nutrition (ICEN), in collaboration with research partners, has demonstrated the importance and value of preventing acute malnutrition (wasting) among children.

While treatment of wasting among under 5-year-olds is essential for reducing mortality, promoting survival, and supporting weight recovery, the study indicates that such recovery may carry potential long-term health costs.

ICEN is currently implementing a multisectoral programme aimed at preventing childhood wasting in the #Mandera Cluster, where it is contributing to strengthened cross-border learning and enhanced coordination among the participating countries.

The team shared project progress updates, clarified the project’s governance and coordination mechanisms, and discussed a joint webinar on Ethiopia’s Marburg Virus Disease response experiences.

Discussions also included the need and how to align PREPARE activities with Ethiopia’s pandemic preparedness priorities. #IGADHealth
