I am so excited and immensely proud to receive the first copies of my new book!!
INTELLIGENT: The Evolution of AI Transforming Healthcare.
It is now available globally on Amazon as hardback, paperback and ebook versions.
This has been a long journey writing this book and trying to understand the type of book that was necessary and would have the biggest impact.
The book reflects a decade of my work and thinking on AI and its role in healthcare.
It is written for absolutely anyone interested in this space, from patients, students, clinicians, scientists and health care leaders.
Fundamentally, it's a story of AI and how it will impact all of us in healthcare and gives a critical analysis of the current landscape.
I hope you all enjoy it as much as I enjoyed writing it.
My country was hit by the strongest earthquake in over a century. Two quakes, M7.2 then M7.5. La Guaira — our coast — is a disaster zone. Likely thousands are dead as recovery is slow and damaged assessed.
Most of my family is there. This is the coastline in the video, "El Litoral", near the airport and along the shores, between mountains and the Caribbean.
Two ways to help, both vouched for by my own family on the ground 👇

Among patients with previously treated metastatic pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, the RAS(ON) inhibitor daraxonrasib led to significantly longer overall survival and progression-free survival than chemotherapy. Full phase 3 RASolute 302 trial results: https://t.co/xwLWBZYRzq

The NHS has a long history of confusing innovation with transformation. We buy technology and expect behaviour to change automatically. Usually it doesn’t. @RoyLilley@ShafiAhmed5 https://t.co/A0f5UJeV2l
AI has arrived at exactly the wrong time for the NHS; in the middle of a chaotic reorganisation and a jobs cull or exactly the right time…
... is the NHS intelligent enough to use artificial intelligence, properly? https://t.co/GKOdKyRjal
A review: INTELLIGENT—The Evolution of AI Transforming Healthcare by @ShafiAhmed5
📖The Man Suits the Title
There's something rather autobiographical about this book. The title suits the author as much as the subject.
I've known Shafi for over a decade. We've argued across conference stages, over dinner, in hotel lobbies at odd hours. The conversations were often intense, but always very friendly. They were the kind that leave you thinking on the flight home. Reading Intelligent felt like a continuation of all of them.
Shafi is a surgeon, but that's almost beside the point. What he really is, is someone who has lived this transformation from the inside. Not watched it, lived it. And in this context, the other word that belongs up there in the title is Experience.
His big idea borrows from Gould's punctuated equilibrium. Change doesn't build gradually. It waits, then breaks or disrupts a system. Shafi calls where we are now a punctuation. I agree. And more importantly, he earns it across the book rather than just announcing it and moving on.
What I respect most is that he refuses to play the hype game. He's been in too many rooms where the promise outran the evidence by a few years and a few hundred million dollars. But he's also not a cynic, and he knows that reflexive scepticism is its own kind of intellectual trick. The book lives in that honest middle ground, which is genuinely hard to capture.
The clinical chapters are the heart of it. What happens when an algorithm is part of the diagnosis? What does trust look like when neither the doctor nor the patient can fully see inside the reasoning? Shafi doesn't wrap those questions up. He just takes them seriously, which is more than most people are willing to do—and that's a reflection of being INTELLIGENT and having EXPERIENCE.
Behind every benchmark, there's a patient. Shafi never forgets that. Neither does this book.

One of the most anticipated #AIinHealthcare books in a very long time from @ShafiAhmed5 has dropped.
“This is not a book about replacing doctors with machines. It is a book about understanding what machines can do, what they cannot do, and how medicine can use AI to reduce suffering, extend life and improve care without sacrificing trust, judgment, or the human presence that patients still need most.”
It should be on your reading list ... soon, like now!

📖 There comes a time when a book demands to be read.
@ShafiAhmed5 takes us on a master class that explores artificial intelligence and innovation in medicine today and tomorrow!
