Every hacker, pentester, red teamer, and blue teamer (hopefully) knows a skilled attacker can craft a payload/malware targeting to evade a known endpoint security defense product. It's just a matter of time, skill, and patience. I've taught courses on this for over a decade at Pentester Academy 😁 "Hello All"
This is why, at SquareX @getsquarex we are moving from the existing Probabilistic model to a Deterministic model to protect users. You should not have to care if a file is malicious or not; you should be able to view-edit it and get your work done!
Also, many times, legitimate files can carry malware e.g., a job recruiter gets hacked, and the files she sends have macro-based attack payloads. Now, hundreds of job seekers would receive this email, some of them very desperate to get a job. What would they do even if their AV/AM/Endpoint security agent told them there was malware in it?
Existing security tools would fail to be helpful in the situation above. The tech guys among us would set up a VM and try to open the file there or convert it to a "safe" format to view it. This might work for some, but most Internet users do not have the skills to do this. In their desperation to read the document, they might override the security product and open it anyways - get infected and hacked!
