HOW IMPERIAL OIL INTERESTS DESTROYED SOMALIA
In an interview with Sovereign Media's Ahmed Kaballo, former Ethiopian diplomat Mohamed Hassan, a veteran Marxist, stripped away the mainstream media narrative that the root of Somalia's destruction is clan violence, instead blaming the global oil industry and imperialism for the issues facing the Land of the Poets.
Hassan traced how Western energy conglomerates like Conoco engineered carbon-copy exploitation contracts, mirroring devastating historical concessions in Libya, designed to siphon away a nation’s natural wealth while leaving crumbs for the local population.
A modern example he pointed to is Soma Oil and Gas, a firm established by former UK Conservative Party leader Michael Howard, who pooled dozens of British oil companies to stake claims along Somalia's strategic coastline.
Hassan further explained how imperialist forces deliberately manufactured and weaponised "clanism" as a tool of divide-and-rule.
By scattering over a million Somalis abroad, imperial powers fractured national patriotism and replaced it with a localised consciousness.
Today, Hassan argues, this vacuum is maintained by a rootless "parasite class" that exploits clan divisions and religion to serve foreign interests at the expense of the majority.
