AAA has a helpful "cost of car ownership" calculator. An average used sedan with moderate mileage costs about $10k per year to own. (A new car is about $12k per year.)

The average American household has at least two cars. If those cars were a couple of 2018 Camrys, that's $1,667 cost of ownership per month. Many people have driving-age kids and have 3 or 4 cars at home.

At the same time, most Americans are living paycheck to paycheck, a constant source of anxiety. Car dependency is a financial burden and a health burden, even if it's the unseen stress on a relationship caused by living paycheck to paycheck.

Imagine the relief if a household was able to save $833 every month (AAA cost of ownership for 1 used sedan) by going from 4 cars to 3, or from 3 cars to 2.

Walkable neighborhoods make these adjustments practical. Standard car-oriented neighborhoods prevent adjustments.

Local planning depts are a power broker in public health, because land use regulations are what spread everything out into "I have to drive" distances.
