This is a positive piece from @KemiBadenoch in today’s @Telegraph, arguing that her opposition to the UK’s 2050 net zero target does not mean a rejection of climate action or wider environmentalism. To convince voters she has a better approach to climate change, she should swiftly follow up with more details about her plans.

Kemi is absolutely right to acknowledge the damage being wrought by climate change across the world, including Britain. This acceptance of scientific reality is an important dividing line between the Conservatives and Reform. Protecting our natural inheritance has always been a fundamental conservative value, and it is brilliant to see Kemi lay claim to that legacy.

She also rightly highlights the statism of many of the climate policies the UK has pursued to date, and that policies rooted in markets, innovation, and competition would be more effective at protecting the environment. She is right about the scandal of high electricity prices, which are holding us back from embracing electrotech as fast as other countries are doing.

We can and should do things differently, and the piece sets out a good outline of an alternative conservative plan on climate action: cheaper electricity would turbocharge electrification; nature restoration has been neglected by this government, but is essential for both mitigating and adapting to climate change; and adaptation measures such as flood defences, air con, urban greenery, and reservoirs will be vital in any climate change scenario, yet have been the poor relation of mitigation policies for too long.

Detailed plans are now needed to make these important ambitions credible and deliver a replacement for the Climate Change Act. While climate change is front of mind for the public with the heatwaves, droughts, and wildfires, the party has a great opportunity to start setting out more concrete policies. This can and should be a distinctive policy agenda from both Labour and Reform, and a clear departure from what came before. It should confront the reality of climate change, but be clear-eyed about where the UK has agency to address it.

This is one of Kemi's strongest statements on the importance of climate action to date. And I look forward to seeing how the party follows up these welcome statements of intent.
