Paula Scher's Million Dollar Napkin, The DiMaggio Principle, and Billy Oppenheimer's Hidden Process

In 2002, Citigroup had just merged with Travelers Group and hired renown designer of Pentagram, Paula Scher, to design their new logo.

She did something surprising.

It was a high-stakes corporate brief—millions on the line, layers of executives, and a brand that couldn’t afford to look wrong.

Scher listened for a few minutes, then sketched Citi with a red arc over the “t” on a napkin, and said: "this is your logo." It still the logo today.

“Seven figures for a doodle?” someone objected.

Scher replied, “How can it be that you talk to someone and it’s done in a second?

But it is done in a second. It’s done in a second and 34 years.

It’s done in a second, after every experience, and every movie, and after everything in my life that’s in my head.”

When Billy Oppenheimer (@bpoppenheimer) writes his Six at 6 newsletter, you read it in 5 minutes.

Behind that process are months or years of clue-gathering. He reads books, dog-ears pages, waits weeks, then goes back to make note cards.

A short list survives from a hundred marked pages. Most cards sit in a "waiting room" for months—no home, no purpose, just held.

Eventually, a six of them connect, and then there's something to write.

The clean, connected insights you consumed in minutes came from patient accumulation that nobody saw.

Billy calls this the DiMaggio Principle: the smoother it looks, the more hours are hidden underneath. The illusion of ease is the proof of the work:

“Tom Hanks tells a story of meeting Joe DiMaggio at a restaurant one night. The waiter came over and said, "Hey, Mr. DiMaggio wants to meet you."

Tom Hanks goes over and they have this conversation. Tom Hanks made a comment about how DiMaggio made it look easy out on the baseball field.

He leaned in and said, 'There's a lot of f*ing work to make it look that easy.'"
