@daddyhope Bhuti Hopewell, a memory is etched in my heart with almost identical circumstances. On one of my tours of duty I encountered Leonard Dembo with his two then young sons and wife. I immediately let down my technical guard and engaged him at personal level. His humility touched me🥹
It is with great sorrow that we announce the untimely passing of Steven Gruzd, Head of the African Governance and Diplomacy Programme at SAIIA.
An integral part of the Institute, Steve was known for his unwavering dedication to his work and his commitment to the policy community in Africa. We will miss his brilliant mind, his deep camaraderie and his gentle spirit. His absence leaves a significant void at SAIIA and across the continent he served so passionately. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with Steve’s family, friends and all those who had the pleasure of working alongside him. May his soul rest in peace. 🕊️

Trade within the SADC region is on reciprocal terms. SA is the giant in trade terms within the region with the trade balance in favour of SA. The latent call for protectionism of the steel industry by SA companies may backfire horribly. @RG_Humphries
ArcelorMittal SA CEO Kobus Verster says Zimbabwean steel imports are one of the many ‘unfair’ pressures weighing on South Africa’s struggling steel industry.
SA imports about 37% of its steel needs. In the six months to June, the country brought in 94,000 tonnes of steel billets — mainly used for products like bars and rods — duty-free from Zimbabwe.
On an earnings call with analysts, Verster called this unfair competition: “It’s a few things that I hope people can think about; one is, the side effect from the preferential pricing system, the second is the intent of the AfCFTA, and here we have a neighbouring country that is not following any of those rules.”
