தமிழ்நாட்டின் வளர்ச்சிக்கான பரந்தூர் விமான நிலையத்திட்டத்தை ரத்து செய்திருக்கும் Sofa Model அரசை வன்மையாகக் கண்டிக்கிறேன்.

சென்னையில் பெருகி வரும் விமானப் பயணிகளின் எண்ணிக்கை மற்றும் விமான சரக்கு போக்குவரத்து - எதிர்காலத் தேவை போன்றவற்றின் அடிப்படையில், சென்னைக்கு 2-ஆவது விமான நிலையம் அவசியம் என்பதை உணர்ந்து, பரந்தூர் விமான நிலையத் திட்டம் கழக அரசால் உருவாக்கப்பட்டது.

இத்திட்டத்திற்கு Airports Authority of India, Union Civil Aviation Ministry உள்ளிட்டவை ஆய்வு செய்து, அனுமதி தந்துவிட்டன.

இத்தகைய கடினமான அனுமதிகளைப் பெறுவது, கையகப்படுத்தப்பட்ட நிலங்களுக்குச் சந்தை மதிப்பை விட 3 மடங்கு அதிகமான இழப்பீடு, மறு குடியமர்வு போன்ற முக்கியமான பணிகள் அனைத்தும் கழகத்தலைவர் @mkstalin அவர்கள் முதலமைச்சராக இருந்த போதே நடைபெற்றன.

Years ago at Vellore, Dr Paul Brand examined a young man affected by leprosy.

When Brand simply touched him, the man broke down in tears.

Why?

Because after he developed leprosy, even his own family had stopped touching him.

For years, fear and stigma had deprived him of something as basic as human contact.

That was the social reality around leprosy, a disease surrounded by myths, fear, exclusion and superstition.

And what did a progressive State do?

In 1971, under Thalaivar Kalaignar, Tamil Nadu established rehabilitation homes for persons affected by leprosy not to legitimise fear, but to defeat it.

The response was medical care, rehabilitation, vocational training, employment and social reintegration.

When society feared touching a person with leprosy, the State did not build policy around that fear.

It used science and social justice to dismantle it.

That is what rational governance looks like.

More than fifty years later, the TVK government now announces ₹1.5 crore for a "mandapam" for people affected by chickenpox.

Kalaignar's Tamil Nadu confronted the stigma around disease with science, dignity and rehabilitation.

Today's government appears determined to travel in the opposite direction.

Governments have a very important obligation to separate faith from epidemiology and belief from evidence.

A scientifically progressive state does not institutionalise beliefs as public health policy especially when it's about a very contagious infection.

Tamil Nadu did not spend decades moving from superstition to science only for a government to spend ₹1.5 crore moving us backwards.
