The disturbing reports emerging from Rawalakot are consistent with the Pakistani authorities’ long history of unlawful violence against protesters in Jammu and Kashmir.

A prompt, independent, and transparent investigation must be ordered into the security forces’ use of force against protesters.

So long as an internet and mobile services blackout remains in place, it will severely impede the independent verification of the full extent of the situation on the ground.

We urge the Pakistani authorities to restore all communications access and allow media and independent observers into the area

Pakistan has blocked access to Al Jazeera's website following its reporting on the recent elections and the human rights situation in Pakistan-administered Jammu and Kashmir.
Blocking independent journalism is an attack on press freedom and the public's right to information. Censorship cannot replace transparency or accountability.
We urge @UNHumanRights @UNESCO @amnesty @hrw @RSF_inter @pressfreedom @CPJAsia @IFJGlobal and diplomatic missions to condemn this censorship and call for the immediate restoration of access to independent media.

PAKISTAN: In the past 50 days, people in Pakistan-administered Jammu and Kashmir have lived through internet blackouts, mass arbitrary arrests and restrictions on movement amid a crackdown on dissent.

These measures raise serious concerns about the rights to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and association.

As regional elections approach on 27 July, Pakistani authorities must ensure that people can exercise their rights freely and without fear.

📢 Amnesty International calls on the authorities to:

✅ Investigate allegations of unlawful uses of force against protesters
✅ Fully restore internet services
✅ Release those arbitrarily detained for peacefully exercising their rights
✅ Lift the unlawful blanket ban on JAAC
