Become a better coach by designing training sessions that provoke team principles/intentions.
Most coaches have a game model with team intentions but don't ever actually use them.
You should be using them to design your training sessions.
Let's go through the process..👇🧵
“We can develop 100 exercises, but the best thing is to create the street. We play 5 v 5 and winner stays on. What I see in these moments - the creation, the type of goals - it just blows my mind."

COACHES WATCH/READ THIS. Brentford’s Thomas Frank with some great insight on how he adjusts his team’s formation and defensive schemes based on the opposition but the game principles still remain consistent.
He talks about marking man to man when defending from the front, and what he thinks are the benefits of defending with five players at the back.
This is a really insightful video and we encourage you to spend four minutes viewing it.
Red Flag #1 🚩
When a youth coach says…
“That won’t work here because my kids can’t ________.”
▪️The fact that our players cannot YET do something is why we have a role as a coach.

Why are so many players poor on the fundamentals?
✔️ Because coaches do not consider these “the fundamentals.”

Resist convention that mistakenly leads us to play-books, practice spectrums & ‘coaching one team or one theme’. Respond with the players and their nature rather than make impositions.
Enhancing player versatility is critical in today's highly strategic soccer world, where defenses are tighter.
Mastering the art of playing slow to attack fast, creating & exploiting spaces, & fostering dynamic relationships between players, both with & without the ball, is essential.
Liverpool vs Arsenal lived up to the hype. It was an EXTREMELY high quality game of football..
Below, in an in-depth thread, I break down:
- Arteta's new system,
- Ødegaard's Bernardo Silva-esque role,
- The tactical battle,
- and Liverpool's performance as a whole.

Stopping the ball is very different from what I’ve learned. The rule was to always move the ball. Beat the opponent with the first touch.
And this is not wrong. But when we don’t have an opponent to outplay, it makes no sense to control the ball in a direction. Otherwise, we exclude ourselves from the other directions.
Example: Control the ball with the sole, then you can pass in all directions and observe the opponents' behavior.
Coaching: What You’ve Been Told
Training isolated technical exercises develops skills.
Coaching: The TOVO Way
Training in context better develops the skills of cognition, competence and character.
Let´s train skills. All of them.
✅Newcastle’s Pressing against Goal Kicks
- Compact front 3
- Forcing them to play outside
- Midfield 3 shuffles across & ST marking the opposition DM to lock them in

England 4v3 Counter Attack Drill
⚽️ - 6 seconds to Score
🌬️ - High Intensity
🗓️ - MD-4/MD-3
England MNT are performing this high intensity counter attacking drill right after the warm up. 3 defenders try to delay 4 attacking players going to goal.
Consider teaching soccer, basketball, hockey, rugby, lacrosse as games of finding and exploiting space.

▪️Exploit (decision & precision)

Is it possible that traditional training is utterly ineffective?
So many kids after 4-6 years of “skill” drills can still not receive or pass a ball effectively.
Imagine six years of training with little to show for it in any other field. 🤔
And yet we persist.

“My first question is always: 'Can this guy dribble?' I only want players who have that skill, so that's always what I look at. I want full-backs and central defenders and midfielders and inside forwards and wingers who can dribble. That's the key.” - Pep Guardiola 💭
