Custodial Death Raises Questions in Bangladesh

A 24-year-old law student died while in Detective Branch (DB) custody less than 24 hours after his arrest in Faridpur.

Police say he fell ill after dawn prayers and deny any mistreatment. His family, however, alleges he was beaten during arrest and in custody, falsely implicated in a drug case, and that officers demanded money for his release.

An eyewitness named in the police case has also disputed witnessing any drug recovery, while the family points to inconsistencies in the official account.
